Forums - Nintendo - Zelda BotW: Can It Actually Score a 98/99 on Metacritic? GOAT? (Based on previews)

No, I don't think so

It should get 90+ but doubt it will be that high

Metacritic needs a "Top Critics" panel like Rotten Tomatoes has in order to weed out the clickbait sites. That would give us a better representation and also may favor BotW positively.

They already do that by giving certain critics more weight in the Metascore.

An objective analysis wouldn't cut 5 points for that at all, the game looks more beautiful than most games this gen even that's for the artstyle alone, is a pleasure to the eyes like few times happens, to shit about this would make little sense, specially when critics always need to have in consideration the hardware for what the game is done, this game is on a half-handheld console, it would be ridiculous to low the score because is technicalluy not at the level of a game in a non-portable console with 5 times more power.

An objective analysis should cut more than 5% because of that, actually.
I don't think that is "shitting" on it, at any level.

But reviews are much more subjective than objective, and that's why the cuts should be smaller on them.

Not at all

98-99? There's hubris and then there's this.

All the previews I read all highlight how amazingly beautiful the game is anbd how surprisingly gorgeous some zones are, that's the first one saying otherways, I don't think is gonna be a problem at all.

Even as he is not an reviewer, one of our biggest and most famous youtuber here, which loves Nintendo, shares that same sentiment, that he loved playing the demos, but that the game is technically not impressive, have lower quality textures than he would like, and was rough around the edges, but that he simply loved playing it, and he is almost a media guy, actually the guys from the indie game Jotun actually quoted his opinion together with IGN on their official trailer on the official PlayStation channel XD.

I'm fairly sure some reviewers will give some cuts on the score because it's not technically on the same level as other open world game (specially with Horizon just hitting), but they will be minor cuts, like 100s turning into 95s or such, maybe even a bit more, which are uncommon scores, like 96, 97, 98 and 99, maybe we'll be seeing a considerable amount of those, but with 100s still being quite a bunch of the total amount.

So yeah, there are people that think that way, I actually also do, I think it's beautiful but artistically, it does looks kinda bland and dated if compared to the big games we have today as The Witcher and Horizon, honestly. I don't think it's particularly a problem, but it's a point to be taken, on an objective analysis.

While it may be a bit behind in pure graphical "prettiness", the artstyle more than makes up for it.I personally prefer this artstyle than simply going for realism in many cases, which is what Horizon strives for.Its my opinion, and while I did not have played the game to really know the extent of those "bland" textures, I would not discount any score due to that from what I have seen and read.I think this is one thing that will vary from reviewer to reviewer, and if the overall game is good enough so that this "problem" can simply be overlooked.

My (locked) thread about how difficulty should be a decision for the developers, not the gamers.

Does MetaCritic offer a breakdown of how they weight certain scores?

Look at Horizon. One single critical review killed the score. Gaming sites nowadays do this to gain attention. Metacritic should also offer a median score in addition to the average score, so extremely bad or good reviews would not have an impact at all.

tbone you disappoint me, if you are going to dream do it big. 100/100 and best game forever

I think that's too high, but a 95 or 96 is doable.
