Forums - Nintendo - Nintendo France expecting that Switch sale numbers this year will pass Wii U LT numbers in France

I particularly like "12Switch is a strong proposition" and "We are the only ones releasing games outside of the Christmas period".

Wow... sounds like a great interview. xD

Yeah... It just sounds like a classic "We're great, everything's great" PR release. Gamekult readers are laughing and complaining at the journalist for not asking anything "touchy" and being really really nice with the guy (which is unusual for GK). But the interview was released at the same time as an article announcing "We just received the Switch, review coming soon!", so it could be a deal with Nintendo for that..

Let's compare it to the 3DS sales in france, as of April 2016:

France: 4 Million
Globally: 58.5 Million

So of all 3ds systems sold 6.83% were sold in France.

Now if we assume that France will make up a similar chunk of the Switch market... that would mean to reach 0.8m in France this year it would sell 11.7m this year Globally.

Switch First Year: 11.7m

3DS First Year: 11.4m

It's not as crazy as I expected, France does make up a fair amount of Nintendo's market.

Also we need to have on mind that Switch in 2017. will have launch sales and holiday season sales that are this time separate, so that means two equations for big sales in 1st 10 months of Switch on market.

Those are good expectations to have. For those who don't remember, the Wii beat the GC's global LT sales in ~15 months. Wii U is a lower bar than the GC, so nothing crazy here.

Switch was not made to secure a niche market for Nintendo. It was made to get Nintendo back in the #1 spot.

We need retail analysts and retail information to form a judgement. It's not like he would state everyone is cancelling their pre-order, no games are selling and I'm going to be out of work within the year. Good or bad reality still equals good for marketing output.

No one is questioning that Nintendo will get the #1 spot again in the hard fought Nintendo market. I think with Switch they made a great product to achieve this goal.

Do you have a link the the interview in French?

The PS4 sold 0.86M in 2014 in France. Looks like they launch aligned they expect the Switch to see better than the PS4.

The exact wii u sales of 2016 are 831k... Philippe rounded it down to 800k! :)

( By the way, only 7k wii u units have left on the French stores by now, 20k in Japan for reference, so shipments/sales gap is tiny )
742k + 89k 2015+2016

Apropos, I thought Mario kart 8 had sold 500k as of june 2015!
According to the same person...

Has the journalist made a typographical error?

The more interesting thing for me, is the 3ds sales forecast, 700k in the 7th year, as much as last year,  ( close to switch first year sales expectation, not surprising though , 3DS is way cheaper and switch has no backwards compatability )... 3DS will have sold 5.4m as of 2017 if it manages to push 700k units in 2017 again.

What does that forecast hints? Price drop? Big games on the way? Or simply Pokémon go and S/M momentum ( and perhaps more boost from the other mobile games, like super Mario run )? Well they expect another 450k pokemon s/m units to be sold, added to the 806k that they sold at retail in Nov-Dec 2016.

Is France a big market for Nintendo. Do they really go for portables?

Not exactly an unbiased source though but brilliant if it achieves that.

Looks like pre-orders are still available for launch day on amazon france.

They go a lot for portable systems.

Most people I know own a 3DS.

However, while a lot of them own one for Pokémon, the other dominant reason people own one is Monster Hunter.
