Honestly I think pure software emulation for PS2 games will come, the question is when.

As far as I see it Sony wants to make a generic emulator that works accross the board of the PS2 library and that at least has over 80% of b/c, they did it with PS1 games.

Also, it's in Sony's best interest to have pure software b/c because they can do the virtual console thing for the PS4, as well as do the xbox originals but call the the ps2 originals or something on those lines.
