Forums - Nintendo - Would Animal Crossing work as a successor to Mario Odd. as a Top Holiday Title

With 2017's line well debated, 2018 is up for discussion. Animal Crossing is easily the next big franchise in Nintendo needing a new game, given it sells more in one year than the entirity of Metroid's Gamecube output and 2013 was the last main release.

But if Nintendo did have Animal Crossing as the big 1st party game for holiday 2018, would it be considered a solid backbone. Note this does not mean other games don't release, it's asking more for a successful system moving way.

The Democratic Nintendo fan....is that a paradox? I'm fond of one of the more conservative companies in the industry, but I vote Liberally and view myself that way 90% of the time?

That's what smaller releases are for. Perhaps say, Fire Emblem or Kirby or Donkey Kong HD or some other such release.

Animal crossing is huge but at the same time I think it would need something to compliment it since it doesn't have the universal appeal of Mario or Zelda or even Splatoon. If Christmas of 2018 had both animal crossing and fire emblem or a metroid or some other more hardcore focused Nintendo IP that would be ideal.

I feel like it should release May - July. Since we have no info of it, 2018 is a possibility.

New leaf did release in Japan on November, while June everywhere else. Maybe they will do a similar thing again.

I think Animal Crossing + Pokemon can work. Alone it wouldn't.

From a market perspective probably, but to maintain diverse appeal it would need to be paired with a contrasting selection in the lead up. Which there's already encouraging signs that that will be the case, with SMT and Fire Emblem already slated for that year.

Absolutely, Wild World & New Leaf each sold over 10 million.

Would you guys accept a Super Mario Maker 2? Or how about a Zelda Maker?

I wouldn't be interested but I think millions would.  The issue is that Mario Maker is elegant due to the Wii U's design: the two screens and the stylus being the two most important that spring to mind.  Now they could solve the stylus issue by just packing one in with the game but the fact that the Switch is only a one screen experience still means you have to undock to edit and dock to play on the big screen.  It could still work but it would be a good bit more clunky than the Wii U game.  Which I think is why we didn't see a Maker game in this initial lineup announcement.
