that USgamer review is the joke of the year review.
Some really low and underserving scores that pulled the meta score down to 87. The scoring is so consistent on the high end but so inconsistent on the low end.
| HoloDust said: Not sure why are people so riled up about that 2.5/5 star review - actual review has a lot of valid points, it's just that score is bit too low...though, one must understand that 2.5/5 stars is not as bad as 50/100, star system is a lot more akin to movie ratings. Personally, I find Destructiod's review quite useful, it's 75/100, but points to some of the bigger issues Horizon has as an open-word action RPG (though calling it RPG is a bit of stretch in the first place). |
I actually agree with this. Negative reviews if written well, are going to be significantly more helpful than a review full of praise. I guess for me the score doesn't mean as much, so it doesn't bother me when there are people who didn't like the game as much. You learn more from seeking out views that don't match your own anyway as long as you can stay open minded.
| pokoko said: It's kind of funny, really. One of the main complaints seems to be that Horizon does some of the things you see in other popular franchises. Needing to loot enemies and gather crafting supplies to upgrade your gear, for instance, is presented as a negative. And yet, this is something that many, many people actually like about open-world RPGs. This is why meta-scores have so very little value as absolutes. Some people wanted a straight action game and marked off points because it wasn't exactly that. Others would have marked off points if it ended up as just a straight action game. It's really not a winnable situation. |
It's why you can't accurately judge a game just based on a number. The number is meaningless by itself. It is far more importaint to know why the reviewers liked the game, or why they didn't, as opposed to if they did. Because you are not them, and you might appreciate different things. But people love to obsess over the scores. I guess the best use for aggregate scores is seeing if it is unexpetedly low, that there are some flaws in the game you wouldn't expect, and should probably find out what those are and if those would bother you.
Damn Sony killing it right now. I'm an Xbox guy and don't like most PS4 exclusives but for the the first time I'm thinking of picking a PS4 up. Uncharted 4, ratchet and clank, last of us remastered/2, Spider-Man, horizon. Nice list of of exclusive for me to buy. Maybe next spring cause I know my wife will kill me if I get this and Scorpio.
Halo MCC will sell 5+ million copies(including digital)
halo 5 will sell 10 million copies(including digital)
x1 will pass ps4 in USA, and UK.

No Man's Sky AND The Order?!! oh my... |
Well to be fair to reveiwers, they do have many games and timelines to do. They may have tossed out a review for No Man's Sky before they realized how repetitive it was, or pointless, or the many other things it sucks for.
Plus he was probably reviwing a PS4 version, not the bugged PC version.
It's one reason I usually take any MC score and subtract 10% or 10 points whatever you want to say.

Yea I don't like numbers. As you said, the low review made some valid cricisims for the game.
In the same way, I've read a ton of reviews in my lifetime that the entire review seems to be the person talking about bad things in the game, yet the game then gets a 9/10. Makes no sense. I mean I guess a review inheritantly brings one to talk about flaws and stuff, but still.

Both games are in low 90s, not mid or high 90s. The only two games that manage a 94+ score on PS4 are enhanced editions of last gen games (TLoU and GTA V). For comparisons sake I looked at all PS3 games on metacritic rated 90+ and same with PS4 games. I counted the games that were made for that generation, so excluded enhanced editions, or HD ports. PS3 has 49 games rated 90+. Of those 7 being sports games. 3 being music games. And 6 being downloadable only games. PS4 has 6 games rated 90+. Of those 1 is downloadable only game. I realize that PS3 has had more time, but the difference shouldn't be that massive. It should be at least a third of that number. So either critics have gotten way harsher and don't give out as high scores anymore, or the quality of games has significantly gone down (which I wouldn't agree with). |
Or many (if not most) critics haven't changed much, but troll reviewers weren't as common back then?

They seem to like games lacking content.
I kid. Is it the same reviewer though?
Good reviews, day one anyway. The same reviewers knocking it for not being original,I can't wait to see their review on Zelda and every other game this year.
