Why wouldn't 3DS owners buy a Switch if their favorite franchises are continued exclusively on it. Why would a next generation handheld system "kill" their handheld market?

Same reason 3DS owners didn't start buying the 3DS in large numbers until Nintendo slashed the price by $80 to bring the price down to $169. Do you honestly think that if people weren't willing to pay $249 for a handheld that they would all of a sudden be willing to pay $50 more? The majority of the handheld consumers clearly weren't willing to spend $249 on the 3DS nevermind $300 for the Switch? What interesting games are there announced for the Swich that would even attract the handheld market? The only games I've seen are that of home console games announced for the Switch. If I were a handheld enthusiast I wouldn't be too attracted to the Switch for various reasons.

The argument of "people didnt buy 3DS at $250 so they wont buy Switch at $300" is kinda narrow-minded. Remember, Gamecube sold like crap at $100 but Wii sold like crazy at $250 despite have essentially the same hardware. The differences were features, marketing & software.

3DS & Switch are two seperate devices with different features, marketing & software so just because 3DS did poorly at $250 does not mean Switch will not be successful at $300.

Hopefully this is a plan B, incase the Switch doesn't do well. Having a portable console seems kinda pointless at this rate, since the Switch pretty much covers both sides.

It will probably be contingent on the Switch's performance. If the Switch does well, we probably won't see another dedicated handheld from Nintendo for a while. If it does poorly, we can probably see an "HDS" (for lack of a better name) announced some time within the next two years.

Im 100% convinced we will see a revision in roughly 1.5 years (the time frame in which GBA/DS/3DS each had their first revisions) that is smaller (5" screen, Vita size), cheaper ($199), longer battery life (3.5-7 hours) & portable only (cant plug in dock, no detachable controls).

By this time 3DS sales & support will be minimal so they will effectively be able to market this device as the 3DS successor. I also think we can see other revisions like a TV only, microconsole form factor also for $199 and a moderately enhanced model (think GB to GBC, DS to DSi, 3DS to N3DS) with a 1080p screen that has equel performance to the docked mode of the original model, sold at $299 to replace the original model.

I guess it depends on how well the Switch performs, I could see a smaller, more portable version of the Switch being released. Making a different console all together would be a disaster though; the whole point of the Switch is for it to be a hybrid and for Nintendo to focus its energy on ONE console, making games for ONE console. Diverging money and resources to another console would kinda defeat the purpose of the Switch, so I could see a 2DS kind of Switch, cheaper and aimed for kids with the goal of it being more portable.

Furthermore, I think VGChartz should add a "Like"-button.

Well the price will eventually drop. It will be low enough as soon as the 3DS stops getting support.

And by your logic I assume that even if the price does not drop every single 3DS owner will just go mobile or stop playing games.

What I meant was the majority of handheld consumers weren't willing to pay $249 for Nintendo's handheld. Nintendo slashes the price by $80 proving that the entry price was too high and was the major cause of consumers detering from buying. How is raising the price by $50 going to attract the handheld consumer?

I didn't say the Switch will be unsuccessful, I said Nintendo will be unsuccessful attracting the mainstream handheld market at a price of $300.

Yes, going by my logic EVERY single 3DS owner will just go mobile or stop playing games. Great conversation.

I dont think they hinting exactly "3DS" successor, IF they more talking about new handheld, and that's most likely Switch Pocket just for handheld playing, because there zero sense to release new platform outside of Switch any more.

It's almost certain that next handheld will be part of Switch family.
