Why wouldn't 3DS owners buy a Switch if their favorite franchises are continued exclusively on it. Why would a next generation handheld system "kill" their handheld market?

Same reason 3DS owners didn't start buying the 3DS in large numbers until Nintendo slashed the price by $80 to bring the price down to $169. Do you honestly think that if people weren't willing to pay $249 for a handheld that they would all of a sudden be willing to pay $50 more? The majority of the handheld consumers clearly weren't willing to spend $249 on the 3DS nevermind $300 for the Switch? What interesting games are there announced for the Swich that would even attract the handheld market? The only games I've seen are that of home console games announced for the Switch. If I were a handheld enthusiast I wouldn't be too attracted to the Switch for various reasons.

The argument of "people didnt buy 3DS at $250 so they wont buy Switch at $300" is kinda narrow-minded. Remember, Gamecube sold like crap at $100 but Wii sold like crazy at $250 despite have essentially the same hardware. The differences were features, marketing & software.

3DS & Switch are two seperate devices with different features, marketing & software so just because 3DS did poorly at $250 does not mean Switch will not be successful at $300.
