I didn't know it was spelled differently, I don't think a black person would react much differently if I referred to them by either.
Growing up in the country there were "Honkey Tonks" where country music be played. I admit "honkey" isn't nearly as incendiary, but it was used by the people it was attributed to (whites).

I genuinely cannot tell if you're being serious or not. That's like N-word 101. Nigga is used mostly with friends or jokingly (at least now it is), nigger is "meant" to be incendiary. I wasn't born in the US so it took me a while to understand that.
Honkey doesn't have as much history as the N-Word, but I would be bothered if somebody called me wetback or beaner or spick, even though I'm none of those nationalities.
