Forums - Gaming - Why is the Nintendo fanbase so emotionally charged?

Yeah, I don't know. Every fanbase is emotionally charged, especially when things aren't going their way.

With Nintendo the fanbase may reflect Nintendo's own quirks. Wii was was such a shi... err... unique gaming platform, that many core gamers left the base, and remaining fans reinvented what it means to be a real Nintendo gamer. Wii U is such a flop that some fans disowned it. Switch is looking like another Wii U, so it must be tormenting.

Ever heard the expression about how an animal is most vicious when it's been cornered?

I don't think it's only Nintendo fans. But I think they are the worst.

In comparison, right now Microsoft is really screwing up on the first party titles. But most MS fans are like "yeah I know, it's bad, I hope it gets better, they should do that and this"

Nintendo fans are like "No, you are wrong, why are you trolling? If you don't like it don't buy it! Go buy a PS4!" It's like talking to 12 year olds, but I know they are older. Seriously people, try to have a conversation. We are consumers too, we have opinions, I own every piece of hardware Nintendo made, I have expectations about what a good system is. The Switch doesn't meet them. I have a right to voice them. I'll probably own the damn thing in a few years, I expect it to have a lot of good games when I purchase it, and I don't believe that will happen if people lie there and take whatever Nintendo wants to give them.

It's not a console war or trying to put Nintendo down, it's about thinking Nintendo could and should do better. And the problem is that a lot of people think that Nintendo is always fine whatever they do, that they are always above criticism.

An I saw a lot of those people just give up with the switch. Finally it was the last straw, that's why there is so much division and arguments right now.

But many of them are still defending it despite not really liking it, it's funny, there was one guy, defending the system like it was perfect, and then he said to me "anyway, whatever, I don't plan on buying it, there is that and this that I don't like about it"

WTF, it's like I can't criticize it, but you can. What is wrong in those people's head?

You see more grounded feedback on the Switch from most Sony / Microsoft fans because we are not emotionally attached to Nintendo.

Many Nintendo fans especially on a sales site like Vgchartz or sales-gaf long for a return to the DS Wii days when they ruled the charts.

So we're just using this thread to troll Nintendo and its fans?

This is really disappointing. We're a community of video game lovers and yet we take every opportunity to form ranks and attack "the other." Maybe we can try to find common ground instead of slandering each other? Maybe we can support each other instead of a distant corporation that cares little for our wellbeing?

I remember back to the Twilight Princess reveal and how people were crying being overwhelmed with such emotion. Many Nintendo fans grew up with Mario or Link and feel attached to them in a way I am not sure any company could have a series mimic, much less multiple ones.

I drove 5 hours to here a symphony of Zelda music, so even though I've gravitated to Sony the deep roots of nostalgia are still there so I get the emotion.

I'm a Nintendo fan but I think we can have some honest discussion of the community. The OP's point is not without merit.

I see a lot of discussion going on it the Nintendo forums but I don't know if I would say it's "emotionally charged", whatever that means.

You may want to give some examples of what you are talking about.

Also sometimes it seems like there are more Nintendo threads started by non-Nintendo fans with the intention of riling them up. I mean, how many "Nintendo is DOOMED" or "Nintendo is out of touch" or "Switch is going to fail like Wii U" or "Nintendo should go 3rd party" threads do we need?

When the herd loses its way, the shepard must kill the bull that leads them astray.

Every fanbase is. I'm a Nintendo fan and sometimes, yep, it's embarassing. But that happens with every fanbase. Normally we're cool as hell XD.
