I dont care. Mario Sunshine was awesome. Galaxy and 3D world were awesome. Both styles can work fantastically well. What I do hate is the concept of Mario in the big city. Thats were this trailer lost me.

Disagree, both Galaxy and 3D Land/World are games that are linear, without open sandbox world for exploring, compared to SM64, SMS and now to Mario Odyssey.

Mario Galaxy is based on free-movement and camera, and it's gameplay consists of levels with multiple end-points (the Stars) accessible from a single hub-world. Exactly like 64 and Sunshine. Mario 3D World on the other hand is based on 8-way movement and fixed camera, with gameplay elements like linear one-time visits to levels with single-start/single-endpoint (the Flagpole) and based on time, accessible from linearly progressing 'worlds'. Like the 2D games. Galaxy's base-game design is reminiscent of 64 and Sunshine, 3D World is of the 2D games. Saying Galaxy is discounted because it's less open and therefore fits more with 3D World is like saying Skyward Sword isn't a real Zelda game because there's no Hyrule Field.

Expect that all those end-points in Mario Galaxy are linear, and there no exploration like you have in SM64 and SMS. From that point Mario Galaxy and SM3DS are more similar compared to SM64 and SMS, thats why Nintendo make this picture literally saying that Odyssey will be SM64/SMS like game, open sandbox world with exploration, and not like Galaxy and Land/3DWorld.

So it's safe to assume that the city is the hub world then?

I think the hub is the ship. The city seems like another area.

I think some people are failing to realize how Nintendo operates when they categorize their games. I think it would help if some people thought back on the kinds of comments Nintendo devs made about the creation of 3D World and comments they've made on previous 3D Mario games, and you might get an idea of why they consider 3D World in the same category as Galaxy.

If you mean their 4-point structure, introducing an idea, elaborating on it, switching it up, and then finishing it, I can see where you're coming from.  Though Galaxy 1 didn't really have that structure.  It got it's start more in Galaxy 2.
