I see many people complain about amiibo, but the fact is Nintendo are doing an excellent job keeping them optional in games. I have played Skylanders, Disney Infinity and Lego Dimensions and can say from experience that those games are massive cash cows, literally forcing you to buy the figures to play the games. Nintendo, on the other hand have made amiibo virtually optional in the games that use them. It is a vary narrow path to walk trying to keep the people who buy amiibo happy while not impacting people who want nothing to do with them.

The funny thing to me is, many gamers buy very expensive collectable figures that have no other purpose than to adorn a shelf. I'm talking over $100 for some of them. amiibo are $12 a pop and represent some of the most iconic characters in the history of video games.

They're certainly not as bad as Skylanders, which walled off sizable chunks of the game. But I dislike the idea that content that could have been unlocked in-game is accessible only by paying an extra $13.

I know it sounds counter-intuitive but I'd rather Amiibo WERE just toys that served decorative purposes. That would be less cynical and far less open to abuse.

Yeah, better if they were just used for unlocking skins and other "useless" content.

But the toys only amiibo you suggest would still cost money. Like I said, Nintendo is walking a narrow path with the content they lock behind them. I think the best alternative is to charge you for DLC and throw in an amiibo for free. What's wrong with getting a free amiibo with a DLC purchase. Buy DLC, get a download coupon for a free amiibo.

Hey! They got SONY on my amiibo! Wait a minute. Two great gaming tastes that game great together!

Well it is mostly that. But things like Cave of Shadows (Twilight Princess HD) or the vending machine (Zip Lash) are definitely more than skins. It's a slippery slope.

I'm on the fence personally. On one hand, cross-game dlc is kind of a big deal. On the other hand, there's only a few uses that are really noteworthy. To underline this unique proposition, they need to increase the amount of games that function with amiibo, but it also can't be too big of a deal. For example, i love that link got you gear in hyrule warriors AND a skin in mario kart AND fighter info for smash. Cross game dlc. They didn't keep it up though. There's no reason the new kirby amiibos shouldn't work with smash and mario kart. There's a delicate balance there though. Day one dlc is pretty lame. BUT, if new amiibos grant me post launch dlc for past titles; i think that balances the good with the bad.
I don't understand why the didn't make a skylanders game by this point. Simply use the smash roster and make a simple 3d adventure game. Seriously, copy skylanders. I'd probably not buy since i collect them for display (guilty pleasure), but good god kids would eat it up.
That's my 2 cents.

just give us cheaper amiibo cards for every figure amiibo released.
If switch is intended to work on the go, give us an easy way to carry amiibos(like 3ds ar cards).

It makes money so yes.

Not sure how I feel about them. They're like DLC but not entirely. On the one hand, they're DLC with resale value and DLC you can lend and DLC that can be applied to more than just one game. They're DLC you can display.

On the other hand, they can run low in supply unlike digital DLC and Amiibo means on-disc DLC.

In the end, whether they're good or bad comes down to what they lock away. If what they lock away is nothing major then who cares? But it sucks when what they lock away is something significant.
