I have played Skylanders, Disney Infinity and Lego Dimensions and can say from experience that those games are massive cash cows, literally forcing you to buy the figures to play the games. Nintendo, on the other hand have made amiibo virtually optional in the games that use them. It is a vary narrow path to walk trying to keep the people who buy amiibo happy while not impacting people who want nothing to do with them. The funny thing to me is, many gamers buy very expensive collectable figures that have no other purpose than to adorn a shelf. I'm talking over $100 for some of them. amiibo are $12 a pop and represent some of the most iconic characters in the history of video games. ![]() |
They're certainly not as bad as Skylanders, which walled off sizable chunks of the game. But I dislike the idea that content that could have been unlocked in-game is accessible only by paying an extra $13.
I know it sounds counter-intuitive but I'd rather Amiibo WERE just toys that served decorative purposes. That would be less cynical and far less open to abuse.
