Rime will release this May, the game was announced in 2013. That's over 4 years of development (Rime developer said the reveal trailer was in-game footage so it had been in development some time before reveal). Maybe Sony wanted to fund a 2 years project, extended it 3 but when it became clear that it was going to miss that they weren't prepared to fund it any longer. They will have projections how much the game will bring in through revenue and developments costs will have to be kept in check.

If the game was supposed to release in 2015 and it releases in 2017 then you can probably consider that in development hell. Plus do weknow if the game is near completetion? We've seen 30 mins of gameplay and trailers before that were taken from those 30 minutes I think. Will it still launch in May?

I still think it's damned weird, although I've just been checking around to find any information and can't find what I was looking for. I'm beginning to wonder if I got caught up in a GAF echo chamber.

And also to have the guts to go from having development hell on one platform to developing for a few.

I feel the rumours it was in development hell was fed from the delays it had on PlayStation. Sounds like Sony weren't prepared to give them more funding for the extra development time and sold them the IP back so they can complete the game.

Ahh, in that case I wonder where they got the funding for in the end...

Ah whatever, we'll just see later i guess

The rumors came from NeoGaf

Whatever really happened, Gearbox and Six foot became the new publisher and the game gained 3 new release platforms.

IGN might have a hint of what went wrong
https://mynintendonews.com/2017/01/06/new-gameplay-mechanics-revealed-for-upcoming-switch-game-rime/

A quick guide of what IGN found of interest and some key details of their experience are listed below:

  • originally conceived as an action-RPG adventure with survival and crafting elements called Echoes of the Siren
  • the title is now an exploration adventure in which you are a kid in an uncharted and beautiful location

Seems it wasn't going to be what was promised, and is now more of a Journey type experience.

  • discover the hidden secrets there along with the boy
  • an isle full of magnificent places, creatures, landscapes, mysteries and puzzles  no fighting
  • game starts with the boy waking up on a beach after a storm, without any memories
  • there are wild animals, like boar and a fox
  • the fox is your guide and companion throughout the adventure
  • the fox appears on the start screen every time you play the game
  • the start screen evolves with your progress through the story
  • there are separate chapters set on different zones of the island
  • first chapter takes about 2 hours
  • you have complete freedom to explore a limited section of Rime’s setting – there are lots of hidden paths and secrets, but only one way to keep moving forward
  • some chapters are more open
  • early on, you need to get some seagulls to fly and feed some boars to clear your path
  • change the time of the day to solve some of its witty puzzles
  • the game has a night/day cycle, although it’s mainly just cosmetic, lasting 20 mins each
  • no dialog, but the boy has a voice and doesn’t speak in a particular language
  • gameplay involves pulling levers, climbing cliffs, activating objects, chasing boards, moving blocks and more
  • you’ll see an eerie silhouette from time to time, but no details were given on what it is
  • there is a shout button to make the boy shout, which sometimes will scare a boar, or activate an object
  • other times that same button will make the boy hum.

Looking forward to reviews to see how it turned out.

This is what I found and it does stem from gaf http://gamingbolt.com/rime-funding-cancelled-by-sony-for-lack-of-game-dev-troubles-rumour

Also the dev later debunked that the reveal trailer was CGI.

Thought people might be interested. I'm really confused by this. When Sony dropped it we were told it was in development hell and what we'd been shown was only CGI. How then have they managed to 'cobble' something together in the meantime that looks so damned good?:

That's why we should be careful before believing everything a random guy tells in an Internet forum. And all the assumptions that were made from what s/he said.

About the game, I'm still not interested (although I love the visuals), but I'm happy to see the gameplay finally.
