An amazing freethinker called George Carlin puts it so well...

I agree with the mods on this decision, it's not like they're law enforcement officers who can make you criminally/civilly liable for saying things here, but this is a platform that wants to maintain a welcoming atmosphere for all people, and the use of slurs is detrimental to that goal.

...why does it seem like everyone is so damn sensitive these days? It's like when I used to play baseball as a kid - you'd slide into second base, maybe jam your finger or something, and the coach would invariably say, "You're good, kid! Just rub a little dirt in it and let's play ball!!!". Hell, even parents would swear that a little dirt and bacteria was good for their kids as it helps build up a solid immune system.

Now??? Good grief - people aren't even worried about just their own "feelings" getting hurt, they're fixated on the "feelings" of OTHER people, too!! Come on, guys! Can't we just rub a little dirt in it and talk about video games and sales numbers? The world is a tough place - I promise you, you won't die if somebody says a bad word to you!! It might even toughen you up a bit!!! ;)

The solution shouldn't be to have free reign calling people derogatory terms or slurs.

At first, I thought people were being silly about this then I saw jew, redneck and jap then I changed my mind. Jew is not a slur in any context. Redneck is not even related to religion. Its a term for country people thats used by country people. Not a slur. Jap is just shorthand for Japanese and it's used by everyone especially in relation to anime and video games. The only time it was considered a slur was around WW2.

1. Jew. Context is key. Under certain circumstances, yes, it is a derogatory term.

2. Redneck began as an offensive, religious term, only used in modern day to represent someone of Southern White culture. Its origins are irrelevant, though, given it is offensive regardless of that.

3. Jap - also still considered offensive to plenty of Japanese people.

But isn't flaming/using personal attacks already against the rules and there was already examples up? Then why use words that are only offensive in certain context as examples of flaming? Jew is right next to kike as an example.... It's almost like you're saying those words are just as bad or equivalent of each other.

I don't believe that is his argument.

I'm sorry, I guess I misunderstood what he meant then.

Better watch out if you live near a college, talon. A Bias Response Team might come after ya.

They are examples, not a complete template of things one could be moderated for. We even say...

"Note that this is not intended to be an exhaustive list of everything that a user can be punished for, merely as a guideline to the level of conduct we expect from forum users."

The old examples were combined with the new ones.

I think you missed my point. What are you supposed to call jews if I was going by those examples? Ya know, just be safe........*breaks out laughing fml

I meant, a religious person saying that to an Atheist. As in threatning with their versions of reckoning, etc. But, i suspect the answer is the same. So, good to hear.

I know what you meant, which is why I said that the respect goes both ways. Someone can't insult an Atheist and vice versa, no matter how radical their beliefs are. Make sense?

Of course. The respect must be mutual.

No - that was absolutely not my argument. My point was simple: Life is freakin' tough!!

Do you know how vaccines work? They actually inject the virus (in a dead state, of course) into your bloodstream so that your body learns how to identify and protect itself, the next time it ever comes in contact with that particular virus. The entire population would probably be wiped out, if we protected our immune system from ever having to do any work to protect itself. We're trying to wipe ourselves out by prescribing antibiotics every time somebody gets a runny nose, though - and this is a similar concept.

So, a little bit of Kirby, Rol and I are a good thing then?

I agree with you in a way. But, text communication loses something compared to voice communication. It's very easy to miss the true intentions of a comment without hearing the tone with wich it is delivered, wich in turn can lead to misunderstandings and escalation. The internet also mixes people with all sorts of cultural and social backgrounds with anonimity, wich makes it even more difficult. Thus, i don't think cutting the problem in the bud is necessarely a bad thing. The real world will hand you those vaccines, but there isn't one that works for everyone in the internet. It can easily devolve into very toxic envyronments, and likely will.
