Forums - Nintendo Discussion - How do you feel about the difficulty in Pokémon games?

A lot of people feel that Pokemon games have recently been do easy. Some feel that it's just right. I think most can agree that Sun and Moon have done a better job of handling difficulty than in previous games.

Regardless, what do you think about this? How can Pokemon provide a better challenge in future games. What makes Pokemon easy or hard in the first place? Which Pokemon game do you feel did difficulty the best? I want us all to have an open discussion about this!

What do I think? Why cant they just have extra difficulties as a stable so that everybody is happy? I have to give props to Digimon Cyber Sleuth, though they fuck it up by being half assed, it has difficulty levels. Why doesn't Pokemon have difficulty levels after already introducing it?

I don't really care. If you know how Pokemon works, it's always going to be easy. What Pokemon B2/W2 tried was good, giving multiple difficulty options. But you needed both versions and to beat the game once? Jesus, GameFreak.

Anyway, even if you think the games are still easy, there are many ways to add challenge. Turn off EXP. Share, battle style to Set or the classic Nuzlocke challenge. But don't try combining all of them, unless you like your own tears.

Bet with bluedawgs: I say Switch will outsell PS4 in 2018, he says PS4 will outsell Switch. He's now permabanned, but the bet will remain in my sig.

I'm happy with the current level of difficulty personally. That being said, I don't see why Gamefreak hasn't implemented multiple difficulty settings yet, after all the complaints they've received about it being too easy. It's really not that hard to make easy, normal, and hard settings, just increase the levels of the enemy Pokemon you encounter at any given point in the game based on which setting you pick, would take barely any effort at all. And it wouldn't take that much extra effort to improve enemy AI a bit on the higher difficulty settings, if they were so inclined.

This is the lazy half assed way. It doesn't have to be increased  leveks, like chaging enemy trainer Pokemon move sets to give an idea that the trainer has some damn sense would be cool. Making enemy Pokemon more agressive about targeting weaknesses.

Look at Pokemon Staduim!  It could get pretty tough because enemy Pokemon were agressive about abusive your weakness if they the ability too.

They're easy if you let the game be easy: if you turn off the Exp. share, and turn off the possibility to switch pokémon once you're told what Pokémon the opponent will send out you're already up for a mildly challenging game, on top of that you can apply dozzens of restrictions that make the game harder such as the Nuzloke rules or using only the items found in the wild/given to you by NPCs without buying them.

That beeing said a Difficulty selection is needed and imho will soon be implemented now that Game Freak can work on the Switch...

From someone who plays pretty much all my games on the easiest setting, I feel Pokemon needs an option for a stronger difficulty. Gets kind of boring to one shot everything after awhile. Which is why I don't even bother getting the best nature as I don't play competitively.

Seriously Pokemon needs an option for a hard mode.

Edit: I just thought of something even more anoying, which could make the difficulty easier. I swear every enemy trainer has like the same fucking pokemon. Especially Skull. Like ffs, give them different pokemon. Maybe that attributes to my stance on difficulty?

Each trainer type (bug catcher, cool trainer, ext) has certain Pokemon associated with them and the "Teams" are no different. I like that feature.

Exp. Share doesn't make the games easier; it makes them conventient. Look at SMT for proof.

People need to realize that POKEMON IS TARGETED TOWARDS KIDS.

If you want difficulty, play competitively or go through a Nuzlocke. I know nuzlockes in gen VII are ridiculously hard, so have fun with that if you need a challenging pokemon game.

12/22/2016- Made a bet with Ganoncrotch that the first 6 months of 2017 will be worse than 2016. A poll will be made to determine the winner. Loser has to take a picture of them imitating their profile picture.

They would toss in some difficulty options or you could turn off exp share, but the series definitely does not need to come anywhere close to playing like Dark Souls.
