Forums - Nintendo - Will Nintendo Allow Full Clock Tegra Portably With Power?

Kinda wondered this, we know the Switch apparently has two power modes, docked (reportedly about 384 GFLOPS) and undocked on battery power (150 GFLOPS or so).

What happens though in situations where you're on an airplane or train that has a USB power out or even a full plug in power socket? Or if you have an external battery pak which connects to the USB-C port? Would the game downclock no matter want?

I wonder if you can run the games at full fidelity in portable mode that way or if Nintendo will gimp/cut that feature because they don't want a device getting too hot/warm in a person's (specifically a kids) hands.

Most likely not. Heat is definitely an issue and then there is the different resolution displays. I don't think the Switch will be able to switch into docked mode unless it detects an HDMI device plugged in.
Games in undocked mode will probably be scaled down anyway so I don't think the additional power will make much of a performance or visual difference.

I hope that we get super sampling from 1080p with external power, though thermals could be an issue.

Nintendo knows users are stupid so giving them the option to fry their NS is not a good idea .

That will be a good selling point actually. Buy Switch and you get a console capable to fry your food

A handheld gamer only (for now).

If I remember correctly, developers will be able to keep full power for their games even in portability mode. I think it was said with the eurogamer leak... If it's real, then Nintendo should have no problem with a burning handheld.

Are you sure that wasn't just about the CPU clock that isn't changed between modes?

Maybe... I'm not sure about anything, and too lazy (and not interested enough) to look for the answer ^^. We'll know soon enough anyway!
