Forums - Gaming - Playing Nier Automata makes me sad for the sad state of combat in Western games

Prince of Persia Warrior Within + Gothic 2 - best combat system if u aske me.

I agree with OP - enemies in western games nowadays give u way too much time and openings to react, u can basically just create one scheme and follow it all the time. Nothing funnier than Assasins Creed combat

almost 1000 enemies killed alone in 1 fight

G2 Gold, hardest game ever.

I really didn't think the combat in phe Witcher 3 was all that different from Dark Souls. Combat doesn't have to look flashy to be intensely satisfying and rewarding. More Automata is a Platinum game, and therefore an entirely different animal.

Dark Souls doesn't have flashy combat, so I don't understand what you're referencing.

With comparisons to the Witcher though, I mean, that's like saying that Tales of Symphonia's combat isn't "all that different" from Street Fighter. They aren't even in the same stratosphere, mechanically.

I disagree 500%. If you approach W3 like its Dark Souls you're gonna get your ass kicked. You're gonna need to adapt cuz W3 combat is floaty and not snappy, nothing really works all the time. Enemy movements in W3 just don't make sense, they're erratic and not in the good way. It's all scripted, if the dev programmed a monster to hit you, you will get hit no matter if you pressed evade or were out of their reach, they're like magnets. The hitboxes are terrible. Dodging doesn't work.

I'm a 7 year Souls veteran but had difficulty with W3's combat becuz how imprecise it is.

Damn, it's almost like we played different games! lol I thought most enemy attacks were pretty well telegraphed, and the hitboxes, while a little bigger than DS's, were very manageable, and a huge improvement from Witcher 2. I had no trouble dodging most enemy attacks with the exception of Ghouls, drowners, and Wraiths(!!!), and I played on the hardest difficulty. You just gotta know which attacks to dodge and which ones to roll away from. Also, you're pretty much screwed if you let a bunch of enemies swarm you, but that's no different from DS.

Of course, I did play W3 before touching DS, so my approach was probably a little different from yours.

Witcher 3's combat system is easy and uninspiring, thats sad and very true.

40 soldiers, they were basically stomped.

Sure if you wish to discount games like dragon age inquisition and God of War. Then combat in Western RPG's seems lame in comparison.

Please excuse my (probally) poor grammar

Weak point of games like Witcher 3 is combat. I think Japanese games are way more interesting and fun to play. I wasn't a fan of Nier combat, since it seemed like a lesser Bayonetta, but it's still miles better than some Western AAA games.

Nier Automata world looks boring.

The first link you sent is an Assassin's Creed video, and the second and third are the same video, it's reveal trailer, which I already saw.

Unless the game has way more variety than was shown up until now, yeah, looks boring.

Which is really sad, as the combat is sick.

Sorry i fucked, dunno why.

Yikes! Either that dude is playing on easy/normal or my build was horribly inefficient. The game got easier near the end, but not THAT easy.

No, i played TW3 with almost all builds and its always like this. Even last boss was boring to kill :(

Geralt has WAY too many advantages in comparison to his enemies, they are basically defendless children if u only know what is hiding in the grass. Super fast, super manouver, super strenght, a lot of long range area skills, stuns blinds etc. A friend of mine has finished TW3 without magic, he just outmanouver enemies all the time. it looks so bad and stupid.

I dont think anyone can make combat as fluent as platinum can. Maybe apart from Team Ninja who has gotten the closest.
