Forums - Sales - Explanation: Why Gran Turismo 5 Prologue sold less than people expected

There is this issue with Gran Turismo 5 Prologue numbers. Many people expected it to top 1 million units in the first week and are dissapointed now.

To clear up the situation: When talking about Pre-orders you have to keep in mind that there are user-preorders and shop-preorders.

User-preorders are the copies preordered by actual gamers who want to buy the game at the first day.

Retail-preorders are the copies preorderd by shops / retailers --> these copies do not always sell during the first days, it is just the number of units lying in stores.

In the case of Gran Turismo 5 Prologue those 1 million units are retail preorders, meaning there are 1 million copies available in stores. We have no information about user-preorders, though.

I hope this explains the issue a bit better.

Why would anyone be dissapointed with the sales of that game? Its a souped up demo sold at full price and it almost cleared 400K...

We know, but they would only buy in for a few weeks, and with 375k opening week, it will take over a month to get to 1m probably, so it seems a little under what was expected, especially with many shops going out of stock (amazon, play and several other reports)

Considering that the game only had 2 days sales i think that almost 400,000 sold is great! I mean thats the best opening of any PS3 game released so far isn't it?

are you nuts? last time i checked the game is half the price of a regaulr game in the UK and $20 less in the US.  That is not full price.

not only that but 400.000 for nothing more than an advanced demo.

I will win the internetz

Keep in mind, this is just for the people who didn´t know.

Of course, most of our users do know about this fact and I´m quite sure GT5 Prologue sales will be stellar nonetheless.

I just wanted to point it out as some people where confused about it.

You are forgetting something: The number of "1 Million preorders" came from a PR rep. PR means: Twist the reality without lying. Is there a hardware bundle of GT5:P? As far as I know off. Can shop preorder them? I personal would think so. Can we count that as "Preorder". Yes we can ;)

Thats why I was not impressed by that 1 Million in the first place (Yes this game is selling good, especially for a PS3 game, but that was expected!)

Wow, you really need some manners...

You may be right as I don't live in Europe but I looked up the price here. http://www.play-asia.com/paOS-13-71-bp-49-en-70-2bns.html
