Forums - Sony - Dragon Quest XI Deploys in 2017, Dazzles in New PS4 Gameplay

When's the west release date? If any.

2017 for Japan means 2018 or 2019 for the rest of the world. Dragon Quest localizes pretty slowly for a multitude of reasons. This one may come a bit faster though since the PS4 version is clearly being made with the rest of the world in mind, while the 3DS version is meant to be the big hit in Japan.

Really hope the 3DS version gets localized as well!

I was going to say "of course it will!" But I'm thinking back to the expected localization timeframe, and I realize it may no longer make sense to release the 3DS version in the west by the time the localization is completed. Particularly if the Switch power rumors are true, it's much more likely to get an enhanced 3DS port than a downported PS4 game, which risks making the 3DS version irrelevant. Not to mention if it does take until the latter half of 2018 to be fully localized, the 3DS will be either dead or damn close.

If we're really, really lucky, maybe SE will have a localization already in the works though to push for a simultaneous release for once. Wouldn't that be something?

Have you really think about it? Do you think Switch is closer to a 3ds than to a Ps4? DXI looks far from high end tech, release it at a lower res and that's it.

DQ XI looks gorgeous already, and it's potentially most of a year off of releasing still, guaranteeing visual and performance improvements by release. Performance also has to be gauged by how much is being rendered by the game at once and what's going on at any given time.

If the Switch truly is basically a portable Wii U, the gap is large enough that I don't think SE is going to be able to simply lower the resolution of PS4 DQ XI and call it a day. It would take actually reworking large portions of how the game works, from how much spawns in an area, to how draw distance is determined, to how everything in the game is rendered, and that's if they simply wanted to push for 720p with a consistent 30 FPS while the Switch was docked. Who knows what compromises would have to be made to achieve the same standard while the hardware is in portable mode.

That's why I feel a highly enhanced version of the 3DS title is likely, much like the work put into porting KH: 3D to the PS4. It just makes sense with the current knowledge we have regarding the Switch. It will be up to Nintendo to prove the Switch is more capable than basically everything is confirming at the moment.

What? DQXI looks to be one of the best looking cell-shaded games ever and definitely is big budget. I don't think dropping it to 720p would suddenly make it just as playable. It's far more likely that Nintendo is doing something else entirely for a Switch version.

What game are you looking at? Are you maybe thinking the game looks like the CGI? Because the bits of gameplay don't look high end tech at all, looks great, but not high end tech, that is not the kind of game that is pushing PS4 power to its limits, and there is nothing there that suggest it can't be done on Switch specs, put 540p, less shadow detail, less distance draw, medium texture resolution and no antialiasing when is undocked, then 720p docked with more detail, and that's it, with a good optimization it looks possible, but we'll see.

What is the average hours of gameplay (yours and general) for DQ games???

DQ games can either be very long, or average out to between 25 - 40 hours depending on your skill and the game in question. DQ VIII for example can easily keep a player going for 100+ hours if they get invested in all the experience has to offer, while a game like DQ IV can be beaten within 30 hours without too much fuss.

A ton, the ones I have played were all really long.
