There are rumours that the Switch itself has a sensor bar just like the Gamepad, that's why the top sticks out from the dock.

There's no IR source on the switch, we've seen the back of the console already.
Most of what is mentioned in this thread is the least appealing part of the console to me, I'll never be using the joycons detached if I can help it. I just want games, not gimmicky BS.

I'm refering to the top front bezel of the device which could have some IR lights.
RolStoppable said: Wait, where does the IR camera of the Joycon sit? Isn't it possible that is in one of the shoulder buttons, so pointing at the TV shouldn't be an issue. It just means that one of the buttons isn't going to get used anymore. All of that sounds like good stuff. And of course Nintendo didn't show it because they deliberately designed the reveal trailer (confirmed by Kimishima) to not scare off a certain type of gamer. Kimishima put it in the nicest way possible. |
OK, changed the gif from the OP since maybe it wasn't that clear, sensor has been in the bottom right as seen during the reveal.
That's why I mention the IR pointer implementation does sound awkward.
Missed that comment by Kimishima.

Found some other nice images of the Joy-cons describing each section nicely from usgamer.

And the tablet itself:
