Considering the 3DS a platform released in 2011 has 20 mil sales in Japan over the PS3 that has been in the market since 2006 only has half of that - yes, according to the people who purchased the system.

 

The PS4 has a edge now in weekly/monthly sales because the 3DS is pretty much at its end of life.

No, a portable is a tasty proposition but not tastier than a good home console. Therefore no, the japanese don't necessarely have better tastes. Its subjective.

Seeing how popular Sonic can be among kids in Japan, it does seem odd that his games don't sell that well. Perhaps Sega consoles weren't all that popular there?

I always found it odd that Sonic games do horrible in Japan, but platformers in general always seemed to be more popular in the west.
