They've gotten trickier with getting your money in general, like putting as much content as DLC as possible so used copies are worth far less. I got two PS4s, so I figure it'd be no problem playing online with the wife, then we tried, ESO...all DLC expansions are locked to one PSN account (meaning you have to double dip for every expansion)!

Kind of off topic but thought I'd share this with you since it'll probably save you some money. Someone had a similar problem to you and there is a way to share DLCs between your two PS4s:

Whenever you buy something, the content seems to bind itself to your primary PS4 and your own PSN account. So your content can be accessible only on your Primary PS4 or whenever you are logged into your own account. So for you and your wife to play your DLC, what you have to do is this:

  • Either set her PS4 as your primary, giving her console "access" to your DLC, and then just play yourself on your own PS4,using your own PSN Account.
  • Let her log on her PSN account on your PS4, and you log on your PSN account on her PS4(she has access to DLC cause playing on Primary PS4, you have access to it cause you are using the PSN account which made the purchase)
EDIT: NVM it seems someone already adressed this. Seems weird that a game's DLC is tied per account. I gues this must be an MMO thing.

I'm doing that now with my kids since I got a pro. The base model is stil the primary. Yet I haven't found a solution for saves yet. We all played the same shared Minecraft world together, yet my kids can only load that while logged into my account where it was originally created. It doesn't show up when they start the game. I wish there was a way to transfer saves, since their progress on PvZ GW2, Terraria and other games is also tied to my account as it was the default to boot up with. A big negative a profiles if you ask me, bring back the save slots of before. Saves disappearing depending on who starts the game is very annoying.

The irony is, that when the industry whined about used game sales, the hardcore were whining about used game sales aswell. Hahaha.

What happened was DLC, online distribution, some of the whiners going belly-up and eventually the apparent backclash. Of course used game sales were never a problem, the problem was bad games people did not want to play.

Have you tried the good ol USB stick method to transfer saves. I think the saves of most games (apart for COD online progress) are tied to your console locally. So maybe you can try something like this to transfer saves from one console to another:

Online progress though I believe is tied per account such as in COD and other shooters which may be the issue here.

I imagine publishers eye used game sales as something that prevents their sales from being higher.

Everything copied over with the system transfer, yet the saves only show up when I start the game with the account they were created with. Maybe you can fool it with a USB stick. Copy them back with the other account signed in, worth a try.

Although hmm, doesn't look promising.

I wonder what happens when they start the game with my account in off-line mode, and I sign in with my account on the pro. My account on the base ps4 will be signed out of psn but perhaps it will let them keep playing? Or just let them play off-line, that's still a possibility I hope...

It's pretty simple, really. Just as with DRM, companies try things until they find something that works. The actual key is to hide your control method behind something people like, such as Steam DRM.

With the games themselves, the first solution was simply the market moving toward digital, which is obviously a huge boon. Even when a publisher is offering a digital game on sale, they're making far more than a used copy being sold, where they get zero.

The second piece has been the rise of DLC. At first, DLC was mostly throw-away attempts to make a little extra profit but developers have since realized that by offering DLC that people really want to play, they can make far more money. DLC has become an important part of the industry.

It's kind of emulating the car industry, where cars themselves have a modest margin compared to aftermarket sales.

Yeah. Each producer must like profit, it's natural, but some are so greedy to become stupid and they end up repelling users, while others are still greedy, but not so much to make it backfire, so they find the right spot, at that point, the greediest ones, if they managed to survive to their mistakes, just copy what they see it works.

Same as always...Not much has changed but the rise of DD certainly has helped alleviate the situation.

"In video game terms, RPGs are games that involve a form of separate battles taking place with a specialized battle system and the use of a system that increases your power through a form of points.

Sure, what you say is the definition, but the connotation of RPGs is what they are in video games." - dtewi

Most of you have figured out why it's no longer a problem. One reason that hasn't been mentioned so far is the rising barriers to entry.

"Barriers to entry are the existence of high startup costs or other obstacles that prevent new competitors from easily entering an industry or area of business." that means it's harder to start a company and become the next EA or Ubisoft these days, so the top 4 get less competitors eating their cake.

With more digital, it's harder to share?

2nd hand will always be there, but for people like me, I'm willing to spend more for a brand new copy rather than get one used

This is also why the big publishers play the blockbuster model and spam the market with shovelware. This is also the opposite to Nintendo's strategy on DS and Wii (that were to lower relatively the barrier of entry). One of the explanations why the big third parties didn't like Nintendo that much.
