Forums - Gaming - Scorpio being more powerful and more expensive than Pro is good for console industry

I fully agree, and I think they need to go even further. As I have said before, you can buy $1000+ Blu-ray players, $3000 Recievers, and $25,000 TV's, and all of these markets offer the same, but lesser experiences for as low as $100.

I would absolutly love to see PS5 launch with 3 tiers. Base model at $399.99, a mid tier model at $699.99, and a full bells and whistles model at $999.99. The same for Xbox Post Scorpio, and even PSVR.

I want to see options, and I want to see consoles grow to become much, much more than just game devices. The ultimate would be for Xbox and PlayStation to be the iPhone and Galaxy of the Home computer market, and push PC/MAC the way of the Blackberry.

With Xbox and PlayStation being massive cash cows for MS and Sony, they deserve to have Flagship level products built around them.

Although I kinda agree with what you're saying. I feel as if Pro and Scorpio fall in the same category. Scorpio isn't a new gen.

You make it look like ps4 exclusives like horizon, days gone, dreams, yakuza6 etc will be on xbox scorpio.

Yes people have a choice for the more powerful scorpio, but what choice in games do you have for the system?

All Xbox One games and a very good portion of the 360 catalogue, too.

I'm making the assumption the scorpio will be a good bit more powerful and also more expensive.  if the above turns out to be true then the following statement applies.

So I think having the scorpio in the next tier in terms of power and price is good.  why?

Well people now have 3 power brackets.

1. Ps4/xb1

2. Pro

3. Scorpio

It means gamers now have more choice. The 3 tiers are not directly competing.  You want the most affordable?? ps4/xb1 base models are very cheap.  you want more power at an affordable price?  the Pro got you covered. you want even more power?  then we have the scorpio for you.

Basically I think it's best not to have the Pro and scorpio directly competing. What if the consumer was deciding between a gaming pc and a console.  but the Pro isn't powerful enough.  well there's a chance the scorpio will be and he'll go for that n

I think the only loser in this will be pc.  You're going to have console upgrades every 3/4 years and the only thing not covered will be the really high end market that is very expensive.  I think because of this the future for consoles is very positive.

Scorpio is a competing with PS4P. The main difference between PS4 and Xbone was 50% more powerfful gfx chip 18CU compared to 12CU and obviously the ram GDDR5 vs DDR3 + 32mb esram. Going by tflops Scorpio gfx chip is around 42% more powerful. Ram bandwidth is more and cpu is unknown. So going by this the difference is similar to the advantage PS4 had over Xbone. So instead of 1800P it will be 2160P or 1440P vs 1800P in favor of Scorpio.

Do either of them even matter? I just don't see what the hype is about.

It is nice they are releasing an updated system now but 4k won't be mainstream till probably 2020.  I only see people with a lot of disposable income grabbing a Pro or Scorpio.  Even then isn't it just 4K movie playback.  Can these system even play games in 4k?

One big difference though.

While ps4 was a decent amount more powerful than xb1 it was $100 cheaper at launch.

If scorpio is a lot more powerful it won't be cheaper.  That's the difference.  You'd obviously pick the base ps4 over the xbox1 in terms of value and the xb1 won't have a huge value advantage over the Pro. in fact the low pro price point is likely much more appealing for those who want to dabble in 4k. and by the time the scorpio releases Sony will be able to cut the price if needs be.

That was one of the biggets problems of X1 at launch people didn't want to pay $100 more for weaker spec hardware, So if the Scorpio is $50-$100 more than the Pro with a noticible spec upgrade I think people will be happy to pay the price for a decent amount more power.

Yeah, because we all loved this shit.

No they won't. I'm pretty sure of that. Most people out there don't even know what it is yet they want it. Thats why Phil Spencer is bragged about teraflops on stage and everyone got hyped.

Some will but most people will opt for the Pro.  it's cheaper,  still powerful and it's Playstation which is more popular.
