Forums - Nintendo - Bethesda’s Todd Howard on Switch: “One of the best demos I’ve ever seen”, promises support

Bethesda was one of the most critic third parties with Nintendo. I don't know if they'll give a sustainable support, but the fact of having them on board at least indicates that Nintendo is doing some things right.

What keeps me intrigued is why everybody seems so impressed with the Switch demo. While I find it attractive, I can't see the Switch concept being so revolutionary as many industry insiders seems to believe (Bethesda, Ubisoft, Gamestop...), at least I can't see it attracting new players as NDS and Wii did.

"On board" doesn't mean much if they bail after 1 game.

Also why Skyrim ... a 5 year old game, how many people seriously are going to buy this game twice to be able to play it portably with worse graphics.

If Bethesda commits to the next Elder Scrolls game on Switch, a brand new game, then I will be impressed.

The Wii U had COD, Assassin's Creed, FIFA, NBA 2K, Madden, and Batman in the launch window, that's like 6/8 or 9 top "hardcore IP" of the day (GTA, Skyrim were the two missing ones).

Is Switch even getting COD? Probably not Battlefield, because EA said only one game and that's almost assuredly FIFA. GTA? Switch will likely be missing several here too.

We'll see but I think the only third party launch window game that's going to sell great is Minecraft (assuming this is there for launch) and Monster Hunter XX. Nintendo fans are going to do their usual thing and buy Mario 3D Switch and Splatoon and then sit around waiting for Zelda.

Actually, I think EA's title might be Plants VS Zombies, to try and catch some of that surprisingly big Splatoon audience. Cartoony unorthodox shooters are growing fast, and EA might try to keep theirs as competitive as possible with the likes of Overwatch, Splatoon and Paladins.

You know it deserves the GOTY.

They must've saw something we haven't seen.

Actually Bethesda sounds like they have more games except Skyrim. Of Course we can't know how strong and how long Bethesda will support Switch, but for now this is very positive for Switch.

Because it's game that became cult classic, it's remaster and it's still great game, and some people who really love Skyrim would love to play it on go also, and you can bet beacuse of Zelda BotW some Zelda fans will also gave try Skyrim while they waiting for Zelda BotW.

Like I wrote, Wii U had multiple huge problems and some good games couldn't change those problems. But main point is that Nintendo consoles didnt had Bethesda suport from NES/SNES, and that fact is very positive for Switch.

GC, Wii and Wii U had CoD games, so most likly Switch will have CoD also. EA said two games, EA sounds much more reserve than Ubisoft or Bethesda for instance, EA will most likly realase two games and than wait to see how Switch will perform at begining before decaide to relase some other games.

Skyrim for Switch is good thing in any case, because it's hardcore game from hard core developer that never really supported Nintendo consoles from NES/SNES and always was very critical about Nintendo consoles.

I think Skyrim will sell decent on Switch because of reasons I mention, of course less than on XB1/PS4, but again decent. Also its very possible that Switch will have some exclusive Skyrim mods like Minecraft has, for instance Zelda mod.

What I mean by "on board" is that, back in 2013, Bethesda considered that the way Nintendo approached third parties was utterly inadequate: http://gimmegimmegames.com/2013/09/bethesda-nintendo-sony-microsoft-us/. I think that this is, among others, one of the reasons Nintendo relationship with third parties has been traditionally weak.

If know thay have been able to convince Bethesda, it seems that at least they have fixed part of their problems. Of course it alone is not enough and without good sales 3rd parties will leave again, as is completely logical.

About Nintendo fans not buying 3rd party games, here are some reasons beyond the traditional "3rd parties and evil and give Nintendo shitty ports" of one side and "Nintendo fans only care about Nintendo" of the other... First of all, an important percentage of Nintendo consumers are kids or (with Wii/DS) "casual" gamers that don't buy so many games as "hardcore" gamers, so they focus on the games that appeal them most (I myself only buy two or three games yearly, I don't have enough time to gaming anymore). Also, many hardocore consumers people buy Nintendo consoles as a secondary console, only for its exclusive titles. Does this mean that there's nothing Nintendo can do to increase 3rd party sales in its consoles? No, Nintendo could try to attract the other audience and help with the promotion of 3rd party games (With Monster Hunter, for example, seems to work fine): with the Switch they have the chance of selling portability of AAA games to attract its audience. Also 3rd parties can suit their developments to the Nintendo console audience (Plants vs Zombies with a good promotion could do great in Switch, for example).

I think we're in assumption territory for now. Nintendo has already shown the partnerships list but nothing has come up yet and probably nothing will until January hits. You're thinking it's unlikely they'll get these kinds of games based on history. However with recent reports from NVIDIA about ease of porting and such and with recent remarks by the higher ups from Bethesda and Ubisoft, I'm kinda inclined to wait and see (which I'm sue you are as well) because not everything is set in stone.

I think portable Skyrim will do amazing all things considered. I know as a huge Eldercrolls fan I'm more interested in it then the remasters which for most part still look like last gen games, the difference between the switch and PS4 version won't be huge. Remember the game is running at Native 4k on Pro, so its obviously not using much more than half the PS4's power, should look very good on Switch. Its a shame the Switch didn't launch this holiday for it be a fair fight.

In terms of why Skyrim? It obviously makes the most sense. Easiest to port and get out the door and its also the most timely release of their current 2016 releases. If Bethesda does have other Switch games in the work (which aren't ports) they obviously weren't going to reveal them in that Switch reveal trailer lol.

I wouldn't for a second expect the next elderscrolls to be ported to Switch though, I doubt it will even run well on the base PS4, but to reduce the significance of third party support to PS4 ports is kind of reductive. Most people will get a PS4 for that. If the Switch can pave its own way in terms of hardware & providing an audience, developers will continue to support it if they like the hardware. By the sounds of it, Todd does.
