Elder Scrolls Online Free Weekend Starts Tomorrow, Skips Xbox One

Bethesda will let anyone on PC or PlayStation 4 play The Elder Scrolls Onlinefree this weekend as part of a special event. It's called an "extended" weekend free play period and that's because it starts tomorrow, which is Wednesday. If every weekend started on Wednesday, that would be nice.

The free play period officially begins for PS4 players at 12:01 AM ET on November 16. PC and Mac players on Steam can jump in starting at 1 PM ET. Bethesda said details about a free play weekend for Xbox One will be revealed "soon." The Elder Scrolls Online does not require PlayStation Plus, but Xbox One players must have an Xbox Live Gold membership to play the MMO.

Here is a breakdown of what's included in the upcoming free play weekend, as written by Bethesda:

  • Access to the full The Elder Scrolls Online: Tamriel Unlimited base game
  • 500 Crowns to spend in the Crown Store on fun costumes, unique pets, helpful scrolls, and more
  • Any characters created, Crown Packs purchased, or Crown Store items bought, as well as any progress made during the free play weekend, will carry over if the player purchases the game

People who participate in the Elder Scrolls Online's free play weekend qualify for Bethesda's "Trip of a Lifetime" giveaway, through which you could win an expenses-paid trip to an exotic place around the world. More details about the promotion, including full terms and conditions, can be seen here.

To celebrate the game's free weekend, Bethesda is discounting Crowns and all versions of the game, through November 28. Go to the game's website to learn more.

The Elder Scrolls Online's latest expansion was One Tamriel, which followed The Imperial City, Orsinium, Thieves Guild, Dark Brotherhood, and Shadow of the Hist.

Will ESO be free to download on PC, or do I have to buy it first and what's free is the subscription?

You know it deserves the GOTY.

I'm under the impression that it's free to download from Steam, and you'll have a "Trial Period."  Someone please correct me if wrong.  Also, you might be asked for a credit card to you'll be charged after the free period is over.

Is this a world wide thing or just US?

I don't know if it's worldwide, but on their site they mention both NA and EU.

It's 73GB anyway so I'm not sure I'd bother.

Been meaning to try ESO. I hear it has improved immensely since launch and is also far more expansive now. And it being Buy to Play rather than sub based or straight free to play makes it quite enticing.

That's what's stopping me from trying this. I have a daily 20 GB limit, and that would just kill it. I could live with it if I really wanted to, but I'm pretty sure I'm not that interested. Besides, my HDD doesn't have too much free space anymore (too many backlog games installed and still untouched).

There is no subscription to ESO now, you buy the game and then you can play it, it's that easy (I'm almost sure) the only thing is the game itself is rather expensive.

I'm going to take this moment to point out that if you want a 100% free MMO on the PS4 and PC you also have Star Trek Online which is free to play this weekend .... and next week, and all the time. Not a bad MMO at all if you like Trek you could get a lot of enjoyment out of it and it's just 16gb so not much bandwidth or disk space required to check it out.

lol it would take you 4 of the free days to download the thing :D Maybe if you could borrow a disc from a friend who has it you could install the majority of the game that way and maybe play it this weekend using those files... maybe not :S

(Maybe get Star Trek Online instead, it's 16gb)
