42 – New Super Mario Bros

After Super Mario 64, it seemed for a long time that Mario would never return to the 2D side-scrollers that had made him a global icon. Since a new 2D Mario in a home console seemed impossible in the N64 days, I hoped that Nintendo would decide to develop a brand new Mario for GBC first, and GBA then, but only ports or remasters appeared… Ironically, there would be a 3D Mario in a handheld (although it was a remake) before a new Mario side-scroller would come, and its success lead to a new proliferation of 2D platformers (and Mario 2D platformers too). NSMB may not be as good as the original ones, and certainly is not so revolutionary, but was a great tribute, and having a 2D Mario after so much time was really cool.

#41: This game depicted Detroit as a city much more different than today, yet with a myriad of social problems.

I want to say Kingpin...

Axum was cold with his guess (Thief), so that means it's still open and it's time for a second hint;

#41: It took over a decade and a certain publisher to butcher the series that made this genre great, but last year we finally got a game, made by different people, to pass the torch to.

Hint 2: This new game actually was what the fanbase had been asking for, and it made sure it uncluded many fan-asked features like building independant from a grid. Another highly wished for feature, tramways, wasn't added until the second DLC pack though.

41- Super Smash Bros WiiU

For a while I thought no Smash could top Melee for me, but this one did it. Gameplay is so much better than in Brawl, the soundtrack is amazing as always, there's a crapload of content and 8 player Smash is simply a blast.

And nobody has guessed my #41 yet?

 # 41: This game belong to a series with many spin-offs, one of which, certainly the most successful one, was launched the year which appears in this game title.

Additional hint: This game was ported to many platforms, including PSX and N64. N64 received an exclusive game of the series, but it only worked with certain peripheral...

Should be easy considering it's strongly related with S.Peelman #41 hint...

Time for hint 40 -

This is a run and gun game where you run forward and shoot everything on screen. You can also ride cool mechs and get different weapon upgrades, announced by a silly sounding announcer. Also, you fight the aliens in this one.

Oh wait, now I think I finally get it, due to you saying it's sort of related to mine. I've literally been thinking what yours could be for hours.

It's SimCity 2000.

That had ports to PS and N64 with a version for N64DD, and a spin-off of it released in 2000, namely The Sims! I would never have connected those dots if it wasn't for your final comment lol. It's great and I played it countless hours myself, still even have saves from the '90s, but it's not in my list. SC3000 and 4 are instead.

Exactly!

i think that I mix SC3000 and 2000 in my mind, but I'm pretty sure I played 2000 more, so that it's the one I have in my list.
