Forums - Nintendo - Emily Rogers: 3D Mario on Switch has more exploration than 3D World and Galaxy

Most people didn't realize that the game was not 3Dworld because nobody played it. Anyone who have played it would have know that the level showed on the Switch reveal is not on 3D World.

Yeah because this is so damn different from 3DWorld:

Oh the camera is behind Mario! Totally different game! Nothing to do with 3DWorld xD

Why don't you post the first image too? Oh I know why, it doesn't look like 3D World.

And the fact that you believe that kind of linear level design is exclusive to 3DWorld leds me to understand why you are defending it over M64: you have not played M64.

And you would be wrong again because I played the original one and the DS one. In fact I still have the DS one. Mario 64 had a playground kind of level, this looks like a 3DWorld level with a free camera. I'm sure the end product will feel more different from 3DWorld but here on the reveal is pretty obvious they are not forgetting about 3DWorld as soon as you say.

Is that a good thing though?

Yeah, exploration is fantastic on mario games, and by mario games I mean Mario 64.

Hopefully, it's closer to Mario 64 and less like Sunshine.  I doubt that many people have played Sunshine recently but I have and I can say that it isn't a game that I would want to back to any time soon.  3D World is far better and much more enjoyable, in my opinion.

My main issue with 3DW is that as polished as it was, it felt terribly uninspired.
Not once when playing it did I get that "oooh, that's so cool/clever" feeling that I got often when playing 64 or Galaxy 1/2. Levels were composed of simple building blocks with very few moving parts or dynamic elements, there were no real surprises, nothing so memorable as finding an underwater lake with a giant plesiosaur in it in Mario 64 or climbing a planet-sized giant robot in Galaxy.

See I can see that complaint for 3D Land but I felt plenty of immagination and energy in 3D World.  I found the final boss level very fun and entertaining.  And I'll e blunt: I find the power up system of 3D World superior by a huge margin to Galaxy, Sunshine, and 64.  In those games, power ups are so contextual, in Galaxy they're most just a flavor of the day gimmick to get you through a level specifically contrived to necessitate that power up.  Whereas in 3D World, power ups are extensions of your abilities that open up new approaches to levels and possible altternate routes.  I really, really hope the new 3D Mario's power ups follow that structure and use it to create sophisticated levels that take advantage of the possibilities with alternate routes and and exploration.  That would be my ideal 3D Mario.

So are you really trying to say that this

Looks to you like a level design more similar to this:

Than to this?

Ok then.

Seems more like 64.
64 with 3D world art style.
