Forums - Gaming - DLC isn’t about squeezing money from consumers, it’s about “over-delivering”

It's true, but depends on the company.

There are evil companies that uses DLC as a cash scam where it's something small or to unlock what's already included in the game.

But then there are real companies that wants to add more giving gamers a lot more playing value, and those are true DLC. Of course they can't give for free because their time is also money.

Are you being sarcastic or not? I can't tell.

Completely serious. GTA Online is one of the biggest success stories of the this generation due to the fact that they keep releasing free updates that bring people back into the game.

My comment was somewhat sarcastic going along with the PR speak, but he's not lying with his statement.

So you'd argue the following is about "over-delivering" and not squeezing money from loyal customers?

I don't think some free guns in Mafia III and some free clothes in GTA Online erase all the nickel-and-diming 2K does on a regular basis.

That's what DLC should be, but most of the time, it's a quick money grabber.. :/

Preorder bonuses are not an example of nickle and diming.

Evolve is dead and buried and largely apologized for.

I don't think Borderlands is good example of poor value as the additional content that Gearbox has been as been great.

As far as Wrestling, I didn't know they still made those games.

Even then, the stuff that gets monetized is largely fluff that doesn't affect the game experience at all. T2 and Ubisoft have done very well in the past year or so about driving up and maintaining engagement and MAU.

Yep.

And goes for more than just T2.

I don't know about Rockstar but some developers are starting to nail DLC. In those cases, it's become a real boon to the industry. Fallout 4 DLC has extended my enjoyment of that game significantly. First time I've ever bought a Season Pass and it was worth every penny.

I really would like to see the same happen all across the line. When DLC is done right, it adds a lot of value.

Fallout 4's DLC has been well utilized. It wasn't instantly available after the game but they gave time for people to play through every nook and cranny of the game and then started realeasing it periodically and we didn't know from the start what was actually gonna be in it (or I could be wrong, i don't remember them detailing everything about it), it at least makes it feel like they are still working on it and it isn't cut content. Granted, I haven't played any of the DLC cause I haven't finished the game yet but that's a whole other thing.

Then you got shit like Ubisoft just laying out exactly what is gonna be on the season pass with a trailer before the game even releases? Gross.

Dude, Evolve came out LAST YEAR. 2K17 came out LAST MONTH, whether you're aware of it or not.

This isn't over-delivering. It's charging people for content that is either superfluous or should have been included in the base game. If you like 2K games, that's great. Doesn't change the reality of the situation.

I had to look this up, but until Civ 6 came out, the last T2 game I played was Bioshock Infinite.

So I wouldn't say I just blindly love this company. Regardless, their most successful and well known games are examples of doing right by your fans. Focusing on Evolve and company instead of the context to what he's actually referencing is where we disagree.

I remember someone from Bethesda talking about how they basically have DLC-jam sessions after the game ships and they throw around all kinds of new ideas and concepts that they thought of after it was too late to add content.  They kind of pick and choose from that.

I can't embed?  Eh.  Anyway, I think that's pretty nifty and you can see a lot of stuff made it into the DLC

As for Fallout 4, Far Harbor is pretty amazing and Nuka World is a lot of fun, while most of the rest is more tailored to appeal to certain players more than others.  Personally, I've enjoyed all it and I love the one that lets you build robots.  Even the one I thought I didn't care for, which just lets you make stuff fight each other, turned out to be fun.  I make my Nuka World raiders fight to the death for my amusement.

Over-delivering to shareholders I can kind of agree.

That was brilliant. I got a good laugh from this.
