Forums - Gaming - Best Bosses in Western Games

So I recently came to the strange realization that all my favorite boss battles were in Japanese games. Games like Metal Gear Solid, Dark Souls, Shadow of the Colossus, and No More Heroes are praised heavily for their boss battles. But I can't for the life of me think of a Western game that has good bosses. Naughty Dog, Bethesda, and BioWare have had terrible bosses. Rockstar avoids bosses altogether. Blizzard's Diablo had a ton of bosses, but none of them are memorable beyond what loot they drop.

So can you think of any great bosses from Western games? Are there any you can think of that have the design and quality of Ornstein and Smough, Gehrman, Shadow Kanji, Bad Girl, The Sorrow, or one of the many great Colossi? Or do you think Western games should try to improve their overall boss design?

Good joke.

Good bosses in western games ended with No One Lives Forever 2.

Mass Effect and Dragon Age has great bosses so I dont know what youre talking about with that one. The inFAMOUS series also has great boss battles as well. Castlevania Lords of Shadow 1 had some of the best bosses I've ever fought. Witcher 3 had some great ones. Jak 2 and 3's bosses were good and Ratchet and Clanks were pretty good as well. I do agree though that some of the most epic boss battles I've fought were in Japanese games. For example Metal Gear Rising, Transformers Devastation, and God Hand.

3 bosses from Undertale come to mind, but I won't spoil things for people new to the game, uh, UT is a western game right? Aside from that, I have no clue, weren't bosses seen as an outdated part of game design by most western studios nowadays?

I'm now filled with determination.

I'm pretty sure there was a quote by some big figure saying that bosses were an archaic design choice, but I can't recall who said it.
