Forums - Nintendo - Will Nintendo continue to market the Switch as a home console in 2017?

“Nintendo Switch is a home gaming system first and foremost”

http://www.polygon.com/2016/10/20/13347910/nintendo-switch-home-gaming-system

If you've been keeping up with the Nintendo Switch news,  you may have read that former statement from Nintendo earlier this month.

But with the recent rumours about the Switch's relatively weak spec, wouldn't it make sense for Nintendo to market the Switch as a unique hybrid gaming console in 2017? I understand why they are not doing it this fall when Pokemon Sun/Moon for the 3DS is releasing in November.  They're cautious that saying the Switch is a hybrid will make it seem like the 3DS's replacement next year which will can potentially limit Sun/Moon's sales.

But after this year,  what other huge 3DS games does Nintendo have to offer? And will their sales even decrease if the Switch is seen as a successor to the 3DS?

There's also the issue that Nintendo handhelds have always sold more than their home consoles. Is it wise to keep marketing the Switch as the home console then? And with the PS4 Pro and Scorpio on the horizon, it makes the Switch seem like another Nintendo home console that is vastly underpowered when it could have been seen as a modern hybrid with relatievely impressive specs for a dedicated handheld console.

Nintendo will market the Switch as both because it IS both.

You know it deserves the GOTY.

This

They want to capture both markets so they'll go for both

[3DS] Winter Playtimes [Wii U]

From 12th January to launch they will refer to switch as a handheld as much as a home console they just want to keep 3DS momentum going through the holidays.

I agree. However, currently they are marketing it as primarily a home console, but I expect it to change to both home and handheld next year.

If you demand respect or gratitude for your volunteer work, you're doing volunteering wrong.

Wouldn't that kill the whole idea of a console called switch to begin with?

Please excuse my (probally) poor grammar

The problem with them ever truly saying this is a hybrid is then it destroys their handheld market (which I don't think is their goal).

We'll see a gradual slide towards hybrid before launch and a full transition if it has a good launch window (sales-wise). Nintendo is cautious about keeping 3DS alive as a plan B for now.

They'll market it primarily in whatever way they think will sell more units... so probably mostly handheld.
