As usual, bigger memory storage costs more. 4 GB SD card costs less than 8 GB and so on. So games probably will use the least available storage to save costs. But the question is, if 16GB is really a limit, because that would be set by the cartridge interface and protocol. Maybe it is only what is produced as cartridge so far. |
Of Course that 16GB inst limit, thats most likly standard size, even Nintendo on Wii U had games that are larger than 16GB but majority of their Wii U games were below 8GB.
N64 had cartridges in range 32MB–512MB, DS in range of 8MB-512MB and 3DS in range of 128MB-8GB (2GB is standard size for 3DS).

The tweet in the article actually says that:
Looks like standard capacity of Switch game card at least when console launched would be around 16; enough for one-layer Blu-ray game.

Yes, it says "standard capacity" not max capacity.

That's what I meant.

I found intresting that OP didnt change handline even Nintendo Life he took like source changed from "Max Size" to "Standard Size".
Why is this trending? That's old news, and unlikely to be valid. The original source is a minor blog-like website that ranks #5,357 on Alexa in USA alone. This information has not been verified since, and while 16GB certainly sounds reasonable, it is far more likely that Game Cards will come in various sizes. There is no point having only 16GB cards as many games will not need as much. Likewise, it should be absolutely expected that certain games will come in larger 32GB sizes. It is very doubtful that we'll see 64GB Game Cards however -- the costs wouldn't justify it and it would hardly be useful for a system like Switch.
Let us not forget that the vast majority of games on PS4 and XB1 have 'padded' data, duplicated data to ease up on loading times.
Given Nintendo's history, in fact given Nintendo's entire history of using cartridges, they will employ variable game card sizes depending on the requirements of the game developer. Smaller size cards will be cheaper, while the largest cards will be more expensive for the producer/developer.
Game Boy: 56kb - 2MB
Game Boy Colour: 256kb - 16MB
Game Boy Advance: 4MB - 32MB
DS: 8MB - 512MB
3DS: 128MB - 8GB
3DS launched with '2GB standard size', so for Switch I'd expect game sizes to range from 2GB to 32GB.
That is the standard yes. Been known for a while. Breath of the Wild is only 14 gigs.
Nothing about Maximum though.
Seeing as the system will support up to 2tb microsd cards when there are none on the market, it's a safe assumption that the cards could be larger sizes too if needed.
