Forums - Gaming - Will USB-graphics cards lead to the end of home consoles?

interesting.
I wonder if I can use a Raspberry pi with this.
A tablet, laptop, phone, etc I would still use in other thinks, Id like something dedicated to my tv.

Maybe a company could sell a cheap box with a compatible CPU compatible with steam and windows, and slot for a GPU, with easy conection and interface...

No, those things have little to no cpu power and no where near enough system memory for games generally.

There will be a limit to a degree. CPU does play a little part, but I agree that the CPU doesn't need to be the latest and greatest.

Even video encoding these days. Back in the 90s it was very CPU intensive. Then When GFX card become more and more powerful some of the processing filters started using the GPU to perform the functions the CPU had to do. It actually made encoding quicker and easier.

Saying that. There will come a time when CPUs do jump again significantly and we will need to upgrade.

So in a sense generations will be dead.

Consoles will die eventually, and be reborn as something else in the future. What that will be is up to future software and hardware engineers. 50 years from now, consoles will probably be USB sticks (if usb is still around) that you put in your TV. Physical media will be long gone. Remember when we thought Blockbuster would never die?

Soon, graphics cards will be the size of SD cards. It's just how technology goes.

but blockbuster is different.  Physical media just got cheaper.  It's still sold everywhere but the need to RENT it was almost gone when gas stations are selling the dvds for $4

What about when Video killed the radio star though? at least some of these claims create fantastic songs!

It was a great song, even if it wasn't accurate. Kinda funny that it's the first video played on MTV, yet you still hear the song on the radio while MTV stopped playing music videos regularly many years ago. YouTube kinda makes up for it nowadays, though.

It was my first Vinyl record as a child as well, still have the record in the next room with my horrifyingly bad writing of my name on it :) have a perfect clean new version of the Vinyl too but still retain my original 1979 record for memories sake (even though it sounds like someone is eating a bag of crisps while it plays)

Ever hear the presidents of the United States of America version of it? The Group who had the "Peaches" song, it's really upbeat but while I'm normally not a fan of covers of songs I really love.... it's actually quite good. (was also a part of the Wedding singer soundtrack, which I loved)

(Sorry for the off topic stuff lol!)

I don't think so, the mayority of PC gamers don't actually take Laptops too serious.

Is USB actually fast enough for that? It sounds like that judging by the article, but I thought it was too slow for anything serious.

EDIT: On a second thought, maybe not...

While most use Thunderbolt, USB 3.1 and above are more than enough to handle the workload...

This is not a new concept. They tried this around 2007 or so and never took off. Remember this thing from CES 2007?

No, the market will always be there, just not as big

My PC's CPU from a few years back still more than meets minimum CPU requirements for 2016 PC games, and my RAM normally also meets minimum requirements. So the only thing that drives any desire for a new PC is the GPU. and because of the motherboard on the PC I can't just slap a newer GPU in there. If I could get a plug in GPU I'd be all set for some time to come.

What is problematic about the motherboard? You would still need thunderbolt 3 though and if it's an old computer then you're out of luck i'm afraid.

I looked into replacing the GPU with one that theoretically is compatible (i.e. no independant power supply) but the connections are incompatible with anything that's reasonably available. It does seem the Thunderbolt thing is a deal-breaker, so a new PC, eventually, is my only recourse.
