Forums - Sony Discussion - PS4 Pro will probably run UHD Blu-Rays via an update in 2017

Not sure if UHD Blu-ray will ever be possible, but they sure as shit had better support 4K HDR digital copies for download via PlayStation Video. They already have a 4K HDR PS Video store for their 4K player, and PS4 is more than capable of playing these. If Sony doesn't want to loose a good portion of the userbase they gained over the years from PS2 having DVD and PS3 having Blu-ray, then they are going to have to offer some way to get the latest movies and shows on the PS4 Pro in 4K HDR.

Are we still hopeful about this? Would have been already announced at launch if it did have this functionality. Unlikely I would think.

NO.

I dont know why some publications insist on spreading this misinformation.

The bluray drive in the PS4/Pro can read a double layered disc which maxes out at 50GB. if a UHD movie can fit in that then yes there is no reason why the PS4pro can't play it. But UHD movies require 3-4 layer discs to hold all their data. And there is no software update that Sony can do that can make them make the drive read layers that it can not read.

people said the same thing about HDR gaming and now every PS4 can play games in HDR via update. Nothing is impossible

The PS4 has the hdmi interface and the GPU capability to run HDR they just never made it available, makes sense, since it wasn't a thing when the ps4 released, they update the AMD drivers to support the HDR output.

The only way the PS4 Pro could be updated to support the UHD Blue Ray format is by having a UHD drive installed but having the ability to run movies disabled, seems HIGHLY stupid if its true they should have just shipped with the support.

Anwyay, its 399, well priced for a console with its capability and no UHD support, if you do want a UHD drive then just buy both consoles or a seperate UHD drive or wait for the PS5

Tell us who said what when it comes to HDR gaming. This is just making stuff up that never existed.

everyone talked about it it when the XBox One S could do HDR and the PS4 couldnt, how it is the biggest deal in the world etc. better than 1080p native. Now everyone is quiet ounce HDR support came for free via an update for every PS4. On 10th november everyone can enjoy it for gaming.

Still would like to know who said it and when it was said. Sources. Plenty of them. "Everyone" indicates it shouldnt be a problem to provide them.
