Forums - Gaming - Have console game prices become unreasonable?

Wouldn't the simple solution be to not buy things you can't afford or not buy things you think aren't worth the money?

 This.

No, game prices aren't unreasonable, because people are still buying them.

While I'm hard pressed to pay $50 or $60 for a game, I will if it's an AAA game I've just got to play (SSBB for example). Otherwise, I'll wait for the price to drop to what I feel is reasonable (I picked up RRR when it dropped to $29.99 for example).

PC games do drop in price a lot faster. I of the understanding that's due to A) Rampant piracy on PC and B) PC tech going up so fast games 'date' quickly.

Irregardless, considering back in the Atari 2600 days, it'd take 6 guys in a garage 2 weeks to make a game that sold for $40, and now you're paying $60 for a game that 200 people worked on over 2 years... Why the @#$% are you complaining??? It's a freakin super bargain!!

Besides, how many developers even posted a profit last year? Nintendo and Activision were about the only ones. I'd rather developers stayed in business.

That's a very good point, except that I remember those games being around $25, not $40.

The problem with the current pricing is that the market has grown dramatically, so you would expect economies-of-scale to reduce the cost of distribution/marketing/packaging/etc., while inflation would tend to slow the reduction.  Instead, the prices of the games seem to be slowly creeping up.

You guys must be young because the prices for consoles and games before the "Sony generations" were unstable and ridiculous. I remember buying Chrono Trigger for around 80 USD.

I'm not that young, and I remember when cartridge based videogames were much more expensive. The thing that bothers me about the price of modern videogames is that they're all disc based which (compared to cartridges) have tiny manufacturing costs. Beyond the initial price, this low cost of manufacturing should result in having a large library of "Greatest Hits" titles that are budget priced ...

I think the high prices are because we're still pretty early in this generation. The PS3 and Wii have only been out a year and a half. After this year, prices are gonna fall like a rock because of the glut of great games that'll be out.

This probably isn't a great example, but I look at the PSP three years ago when it released and games cost $50 each and they weren't even that briliant. Fast forward to the present and just last weekend I went to Gamestop and bought 3 brand new games God of War, FF7, and Patapon for $100. You can even make the argument that these games are among the ten best that have released on any platform in 2008 so far.

Then again, the fact I can get those 3 games for less than the price of 2 brand new PS360 games goes to show just how bad the console prices are.

My Top 5:

Shadow of the Colossus, Metal Gear Solid 3, Shenmue, Skies of Arcadia, Chrono Trigger

My 2 nex-gen systems: PS3 and Wii

Prediction Aug '08: We see the PSP2 released fall '09. Graphically, it's basically the same as the current system. UMD drive ditched and replaced by 4-8gb on board flash memory. Other upgrades: 2nd analog nub, touchscreen, blutooth, motion sensor. Design: Flip-style or slider. Size: Think Iphone. Cost: $199. Will be profitable on day 1.

And yet Greatest Hits seem to have all but disappeared on all 3 consoles... I'm not sure why people are ignoring this part of my complaint and just focusing on the base price of the media...

PC games can also be cheaper due to lower licensing fees and increased competition. Microsoft doesn't take a cut of game sales revenue for every Windows title you sell, after all, and there are a LOT more developers and publishers in the PC gaming space than there are in the Console space, mostly due to the console manufacturers holding the keys to the system.

"$50 in 2000 has the same buying power as $61.47 in 2008"

games are actually getting less expensive.

Except that ignores all the other aspects of the argument like expensive DLC, ridiculous markups on special editions, costly online on something that should be free, the lack of price drops, and the comparison in price with games that have far superior features and content for less price... Great reading comprehension there buddy.

If you want me to comment on DLC prices then give me the average price of a DLC.

No one is forcing you to buy special editions.

Why should online be free?

There are plenty of games in stores that have been dropped in price.

The higher price for console games compared to pc games is the price you pay for a controller and the gaurantee that the game you pay for will work at its highest performance on your game machine.

Do you think that inflation should not be discussed?

I don't know what the "average" price is for DLC, but Halo 3 and Call of Duty 4 are both charging $10 for a few maps. Rock Band charges $.99 to $2.99 for a single song, with the average being over $1.99. Guitar Hero 3 releases songs in packs of 6 for $6.25.

I'm not saying anyone is "forcing" me to buy anything. I'm questioning if the value is reasonable for the content. We can discuss value without discussing being forced to pay for things...

Online should be free because it is free while offering a better experience on PC. Why should I be paying money for less features than I can get elsewhere for free?

Of course there are games that drop in price, they are just dropping much slower than they used to. Gamedube and PS2 games used to be in Player's Choice and Greatest Hits a year or so after they launched. They were sold for $20 at this price. This system of selling games for reasonable discount prices seems to have all but disapppeared, and for the few times it is in use prices inflated ($30 is now discount for PS3 and 360).

The price you pay for a controller? No it isn't. You pay $60 for a controller. And if you want a controller on the PC, you plug it right in. I actually own a 360 controller that I plug right in.

Also, sorry if I offended you with the reading comprehension comment.

 Thank you for your apology.

I think this topic has a problem.  Each person assigns a different value to things.  When value is the topic there is no use in arguing, because it is impossible to win the arguement.  We should let a free market economy solve this.  If the value you assign to a given set of content is greater or equal to the price then buy it.  If the value you assign to a given set of content is less than the price then don't buy it.

I should be the one complaining, here in Australia games are crazily overpriced, no shit... you guys pay like 60 - 65 dollars for games (Depends where you shop obviously), at every store here games are atleast 95 dollars, at eb games and other game retailers they are 109 - 120 dollars, it's a joke and i'm really sick of it, i could buy two games in America for the price of one in Australia.
