Man, if it can't even do 720p 30fps then that will be really disappointing. It's one of the reasons why I was really hoping eurogamer was wrong about the NS being a hybrid because it would almost certainly doom it to being another Nintendo device that only plays Nintendo games. |
I think you're on the right track. I think that since the Switch is clearly not going to compete with Xbox One/ PS4 in sheer horsepower, even though it's four years newer, perhaps Nintendo's method to get it to run these higher-end games on such modest specs is to keep native resolution capped at 540, and simply upscale to 720 in mobile mode, and 720 or 1080 in dock mode? I don't really know. But it certainly makes sense.
I think first and foremost, the major trade-off we have to come to accept about Switch, and what Nintendo had to do in order to make this "console" a reality, is to sacrifice horsepower in order to achieve affordable cost, and reasonable battery life.
In two years, when manufacturing costs come down, assuming Switch is successful (It most definitely will be :)), Nintendo is likely already planning on refreshing the model, as they've done for over a decade, with DS, then 3DS, and simply release a slightly improved version of the current system, with the same base-line specs, but better ancillary capabilities... better battery, improved screen brightness, quieter fan-cooling, lower power consumption, etc.
You know what I mean? Like, any time you buy the launch model of anything, whether it be a car, game system, whatever, it's always going to be more expensive and less streamlined than the newer versions. Heavens, just look at Xbox One S vs OG Xbox One. Difference is night and day.
