Forums - Nintendo - Nintendo: Switch is a home gaming system ‘first and foremost’

That's unfortunate because as a handheld I really like the idea but as a home console I find it disappointing.

This.  It seemed like an impressive handheld with playing on TV feature.

Also that trailer showed 99% of the Switch as a handheld (It was on a plane, in a car, on the roof, at a Go Kart place, by a basketball court etc..)

And if it truly is a home gaming system first and foremost, then why is playing multiplayer all showing playing on the little screen rather than on TV?  No couch coop was ever shown.

....More like cramped coop with tiny controllers >.>

This is good news because I really want another Nintendo Handheld after my 3DS and the switch isn't it, so they might release a new handheld after the switch :) well at least thats how i am reading it

that would be amazing!

They just want to avoid more 3DS decline than necessary until March. They will whistle a different tune after the Switch release, then it is the successor of both 3DS and Wii U.

The DS also wasn't a GBA replacement, just a "third pillar".

If the game can be played co-op on the screen with the little controllers, than it can be played co-op on the coach with a big TV and normal controllers, I think that's pretty obvious.

It should be marketed as a portable gaming console. Hook it up to a TV, or play it on the go. Get rid of the words 'home' and 'handheld', because they only apply to the Wii U and 3DS and their predecessors. This is different.

Nothing says "home console" like a trailer where 70% of it is shown being played outside of the house, including on a bus, airport, airplane, etc. lol.

Nintendo basically wants to reserve the "handheld" tag for the 3DS since they still want to be able to sell it for a year or two more, they can't do that if people start saying this is the 3DS replacement.

Its probably because the games will be more like console games.

but how is that really different from the 3ds library then, alot of those games could be considered console games. It had full fleged Smash game on it after all. I think tech has reached the point where the distinction between console and portables games is pretty null IMHO

If that's the case, and Nintendo expects me to use this mostly as a home console, then they have to show me what the Switch offers for the 90% of the time that I'm playing it at home.

I think they dont want to admit that they might be done with traditional home consoles as they cant compete there anymore, but they still have portables on lock

Was it shown that it could be played that way in the trailer?

It's more like a reverse Wii U if anything.

Instead of having the bulk of the processing capabilities in the console itself, it's now in the Tablet.

But from the preview... it's clearly more of a handheld...

Only because you don't know of its battery life that is only one hour. Switch won't be used outsides of homes a lot, therefore it's a home gaming system first and foremost.

I was seriously thinking about this earlier today after the announcement that the dock would be just for charging. Maybe the battery life is so low that calling it a handheld would kill it.

Hope I'm wrong though
