Was it a surprise that the Week after 1 Million Blu-Ray enabled devices were sold that Blu-Ray dominated in the tiny HD-Movie market? After all, most people who bought a PS3 would buy (at least) one movie to try out the feature.

The question is whether it will still be as popular in 6 months.

Well its 6 months later in the US and Br is still kicking hddvds ass, In Japan PS3 pretty much killed hddvd right away.

HD-DVD is practically non-existant in Japan.  You can order them online, but I have yet to see a single one in a store.

It doesn't suprise me that Blu-Ray media sales could catch up to HD-DVD sales that fast. While a number like 87% of the previous HD-DVD sales looks great  you got to note that the absolute sales numbers are absolutely pitiful. HD media sales in europe are extremly low by now.

Take the german Media Control charts as an example. You'll just need to sell about 1.000 HD-DVD  to  enter the  Top 10.  Sell  20-30 discs and you're listed in the Top 100. That's just ridiculous.

I wonder if they the 500k Casino Royale they gave away with PSN sign ups are included in the numbers.

Blu-Ray should fail, its too out of tune with the times. And doesn't support the porn industry, and as ridiculous as that sounds that's what killed Beta Max honestly. HD-DVD works on regular DVD players as a regular DVD too so you're not required to buy a new player, thus allowing for a smooth transition of the market. It's no surprise Europe will suck Blu-Ray's balls, they're gay for anything Sony related, but it is nice to see movies like the Matrix comming to HD-DVD, hopefully more must have titles will grace the HD-DVD format and give it the edge it badly needs. I just pray the Star Wars movies will be HD-DVD, though I have no clue as to Twentieth Century Fox's affiliations on the matter. However with Sony's hand in so many films now-a-days it'll be a hard battle for HD-DVD.

As with all of Sony's products and their affiliated projects (Sony is one of the nine companies associated in developing Blu-Ray) the only way they win is by forcing you to buy their product, not choosing it.

That's been my question every time Sony fanboys brag about Sony press releases bragging about how many bluray movies are being "sold".  So few HD movies are being sold that 500k or even 100k is a major share.

lol if not, just imagine the classis the dude might post in the future.

Gballzack, it's obvious you have very little, to no, knowledge of either format or their industry support. First of, the porn industry is going to play a very little part in the Blu-Ray/HD-DVD war.

Nowadays most of the sales the porn industry carries is from online, the sales of their disc-based products is irrelevant to the overall success of either format. Second, you brought up the argument of popular movies (Or Matrix in your example) for HD-DVD only, when in reality, it's the other way around. Blu-Ray has the majority of movie support (With popular box-office hits such as Spiderman and Pirates coming on Blu-Ray only). Blu-Ray is definitely running away with the marketshare. With vast majority of industry support, the PS3, and popular titles coming out for the format, I could see that trend continuing for quite awhile.

SOLD

numbers provided by nielson usually, so no freebies in them.

Plus you might wonder about hddvd sales, buy a hddvd player and get 5 movies free.
