More than 5 million sold when it was released 19 months after consoles and being avalaible already in 4 systems with more than 220m of userbase? That's a failure?
Mother of God.
That's a shame, would have loved to seen how good that game could have looked and played on a high powered PC with the modding community helping out, but they'd have to get off their ass and release the darn thing in a timely fashion. By the time it released most of us had already played the hell out of it on consoles (I did on both the PS3 and PS4 by that point lol)
Considering how well other games are able to sell on the PC, this seems like a silly decision to me... just get it out in a timely fashion.
According to Steamspy it has 5.6 million owners on Steam.
Its not a failure on PC, its just more profitable on consoles.

And also 4 or 5 years is not a big problem becuase PC gamer used to wait that long , i was a PC gamer as well since 90s and there are games that we PC gamer have to wait for very long to come. And also console game price is more benficial to Rockstar anyway. It will be logical to wait console gamer to stop hyping the games and make the price cheaper on PC and PC gamer will still buy the games especially on discounted prices |
Flaming, what?.
I'm talking about the latter years you chose rather than the shorter, because I just don't see the process extending per port job with R*. It's like saying Bethesda will make a PC port of their upcoming game to PC 4-5 whole eyars after consoles, that just doesn't make logical sense.
Having to wait 4-5 years for a console port job is a problem, no matter what way yout ry to spin it as not being any sort of big issue. I gamed on PC as well back in the 90's and yes we had to wait very long, but those same exact replicated days aren't here today, not in the same legnth you'd have to wait for a console to PC port.
Everyone loves to buy games at discounted prices, this isn't just a PC only PC gamers do. Wanting to buy a 4-5 year old console port job, of course I'd want to buy it for cheap, asking for a high price for such a port job years later in insane to ask for.
Mankind, in its arrogance and self-delusion, must believe they are the mirrors to God in both their image and their power. If something shatters that mirror, then it must be totally destroyed.

If we also take into account for the headstart last gen and current gen had as well.

Yes, who on their right mind would compare X1 (probably around 10M consoles at the launch of GTA V on it) to PC with over 200M install base right? |
Where are you getting that 200m install base from? How many PC's are out there with a 750 ti or better? I mean, I know there are a lot of PC gamers, but there are also a lot of completely different types of games to play on the platform. Fans of MMOs, sims, MOBAs and RTS's probably won't be very interested in console type games, and quite possibly don't even have rigs capable of outperforming an Xbone to begin with. PC as a gaming platform is huge, but PC as a direct competitor to consoles is still relatively small, despite what fanboys on the internet may tell you. I guarantee you R* was not expecting PS4 level numbers from their PC port.

^ THIS THIS THIS Also they had physical version with Rockstar Social Club key and Digital Social Club keys, which probably sold a lot because they were cheaper! I'd say 8 million would be a good guess |
I didn't realise there was a non-steam version of GTA V. I can't really see it selling more than 1mil physically, though, which would still be pretty good, honestly.

Yes, some games do sell better on PC. But it's basically a minority. Mind that Bethesda games sell better on consoles, like Fallout 4 or Skyrim did. Arkham Knight is hard to evaluate because they screwed up the PC version, so I don't think it's fair to compare the numbers. It's on 900K on PC, so if it wasn't half-assed it could go as far as 3 times this number up to this point. MK X sold 0.6M on PC, which is a decent showing, but mind that console versions are at 4M retail only, which is almost 7 times more sales at a normally higher retail price. This explains the momentary lack of support (I say this because they indeed added the missing content and improved netcode to the PC version this month). |
Digital sales are more profitable than retail, the 600k of Mortal Kombat can have the same profit as 1 million+ at retail. But, despite PC being nearly 100% Digital, they probably sold 10+ millions digital units on consoles.
Nearly 6 millions of units sold via Digital sales is very good, they will be able to make all the development(of the entire game) back if they continue to sell like that on the PC.

Yes because most computers are workstations, not gaming machines. And PC gaming is falling. No one has time for the cumbersome setups and what not. And its amazing what you can do with PC but its really too expensive and for some folks they are intimidated by it. They are a very loud group of people but they are infact quite the minority. I mean, PSVR blew Rift and Vive away in a single day as far as sales. This actually happened.
