I was arguing with a freind yesterday about how nintendo basically release the same 7 games every generation with updated graphics and never invest in new IPs at the same level as their classic characters. He calims that they release lots of quality new games...but when it came down to it I couldn't think of a single new gaming property in the last 5 years that nintendo released and that averaged revews of 85 or above.

Can anyone can think of the last time they released an original IP to amazing reviews? N64 era has lots of them(goldeneye, perfect dark, jet force...basically all rare)...but gamecube and wii, I cant think of a single game.

Can anyone think of one?

If you're thinking in terms of sales, Wii Sports would definitely qualify. Not just because it comes with the Wii, but because the game itself is extremely popular. Disaster: Day of Crisis certainly won't be as popular as that but I think it will surprise everybody and sell at least 1.5 million worldwide.

Pikmin, animal crossing, Wii series, Brain Training games, Nintendogs, Advanced Wars, Chibi-Robo (maybe not AAA :P), Custom Robo, Geist, Endless Ocean

Not all rank 85+ but they are new IPs none the less and all are pretty successful.

Golden sun also has almost 90%.

Yeah Wii sports is huge on sales but the reviews are not stellar... But yeah, I guess nintendo still does invest in new IP's.
Because once mario has gone to space...there is not much elsewhere he can go. :)

When Nintendo releases sequels, they do FAR more than just update the graphics.
