Forums - Gaming - PlayStation VR First Impressions

I just played Playroom VR for the first time. Robot escape is indeed brilliant. Huge grin factor, wow VR is perfect for 3D platformers. Can't wait to play a Jak & Dexter type game in VR.

The other games are nice too but I don't really see this social stuff take off. I mean who the hell wants to play on the tv instead of the headset. It was the other way around with the gamepad, nobody wanted to be the one stuck on that lol, now it's 4 on tv and 1 headset...

I'll tell you this much. my first impression is that the Canadian price is insane. $699 for the bundle at Best Buy. I mean, everything is bad up here now, but seeing this is kind of a turn off. I'll be dropping I'm guessing $550 for the Pro, so PSVR is a no go for now. http://www.bestbuy.ca/en-CA/product/playstation-4-playstation-vr-launch-bundle-3001559/10417949.aspx

So, what's the reason for stuff to be so expensive in Canada? Still cheaper than Australia though as there's no bundle so that's $760 without the game.

Apple (and apparently now Sony) are profiteering then.  Microsoft is generally slightly cheaper, and sometimes significantly cheaper in Canada.  For example, the regular price of an Xbox Live subscription is $59.99 in Canada ($45.77 USD at the current exchange rate).  The red Gears of War 2TB Xbox One S console is $449.00 CAD at the Microsoft Store, the equivalent of $342.63 USD.  A Groove music pass is $99.90 CAD, the equivalent of $76.23 USD (vs. the $99 USD Microsoft charges in the U.S.).

So Canada is a good deal, or a bad deal, depending on which manufacturers, and which storesl, you're patronizing.

As for Australia, remember that Australian prices generally include sales taxes, and Canada/U.S. prices are almost always advertised at a pre-tax price.  You generally have to remove VAT from the Australian price to do anything close to a fair comparison.

The image looks a good chunk better than on my Oculus and it also tops the Vive! Pixels are far less visible, also screen-door effect isn't as bad! I don't know which magic this is that lets it look better than my Oculus and Gear VR, both of which feature a significantly higher resolution. But I really liked it.

sony added RGB subpixels, which help smooth out the image.

also sonys headset can support 120Hz. The Rift and Vive use 90Hz displays.

Despite the greater number of subpixels and the display rate differences, the higher resolution of the Vive paired with room-scale made it a far more immersive experience for me than PSVR, based on trying out each.  Based on price I was seriously considering the PSVR, but have instead decided to invest in the HTC Vive given some of the PSVR's reported set-up and tracking issues.  Keep in mind too that how good an Oculus or Vive looks is in part affected by the grade of PC it's hooked up to, too.  I didn't notice significant screen door effect (SDE) with the Vive though, and perhaps I'd be more critical of it if I did.  I noticed slight SDE with both the Vive and the PSVR, and in both cases I quickly ignored it as I was immersed in the overall experience.

If I already had a PS4 I don't doubt I'd buy a PSVR.  The PSVR is an impressive unit for the price.  The problem is that you can't use it on its own.  The fact that I don't already have a PS4 makes it far less financially appealing vs. a Vive and upgrading my PC.  A PS4 isn't something I would otherwise want (for non-VR purposes) anyway, whereas upgrading my PC is something I would benefit from for non-VR uses.  They've talked about expanding it to the PC down the road, but the lack of info means I don't know what that means.  Will it be an open approach (like the Vive), or a walled-garden (like the Oculus)?  Too many variables to invest in it on that basis right now.  A shame because I'm hungry for some VR experiences here!  :)

So I tried vr porn.

I had to download it from the web. Then, transfer it to a memory stick. Then, view it on the media player. It wasn't worth it. Unless you're into having sex with 50ft women. If not, save yourself the effort.

And yes, I orgasmed twice.

Odd, 2TB XBox One S gears bundle is CAD 549 in regular shops, there is no Gears bundle here in the microsoft store (online)
PS4 pro will be CAD 499, $380. It's just that shops have chosen to round up psvr to 549.

You have to shop around though, for example Microplay charges 65 for the camera and 140 for 2 move pack, Best buy 75 for the camera and 130 for 2 move pack. But yeah ps+ was 50 here, recently increased to 70 :/

Physical games were usually cheaper here than on Steam although that difference has pretty much disappeared, CAD 80 for new games no matter where you get them. But that's $60. Burn more oil then our dollar can go back up!

Really a good review for helping other people what is thinking about bying one

First impressions of Tumble VR.

Still a neat puzzle game, I completed the first 4 zones in one sitting. It's got some nice polish in the graphics department, gameplay is pretty much the same. You sit on one side manipulating blocks in front of you, no need to walk around to build big although you can. It's nice to have the big tower in front of you which makes it easier to judge angles and spaces etc. However you can still move the controller through blocks which is a bit immersion breaking, picking blocks back up makes them snap back into original orientation which will disrupt nearby blocks, and the biggest let down is you don't get to knock down your tower at the end, doh!

Unfortunately Tumble is limited by how well tracking works. Right in front your eyes any unwanted movement is clearly visible and for some reason the headset tracking was spazzing out in the first view levels. Slight turn off my head made the whole level violently move forward and backward. No clue what was going wrong. I tried different positions to sit in, reset the viewpoint numerous times, then after a few levels it went away and tracking was near perfect again. Very odd.

Overall Tumble VR is a good conversion into VR but doesn't do anything new with the format.

I think my game room is just the ideal PSVR setting because everything works so well! I don't have Tumble VR but I played the demo. It works so well, I used it to impress people with the new purchase. The controls feel so tight. I don't want to buy it because I'd get frustrated but I was very impressed, nonetheless.

I think I figured out the problem. I was turning on the headset in advance out of camera view and I guess it didn't calibrate right. When I played Rez Infinite after rotational tracking didn't work at all,  the VR screen stayed fixed in front of me. I had to restart the game while standing in view of the camera for it to unlock again. At least I hope it's just that and not any hardware malfunction.

Btw Area X in Rez infite, mind blown.

I keep hearing great things about Rez. I need to check it out-- or maybe I shouldn't. I've spent to much.

-PSVR: $400

-PS4 camera: $60

-2 Move controllers: $100 (!?!)

-Move charger: $20

-PSVR Worlds: $40

-Until Dawn Rush of Blood: $20

-Batman Arkham VR: $20

-Here They Lie: $20

And I spent $100 for a 2TB HDD and I'm getting a PS4 Pro next month. I think i need to avoid any and all additional purchases (I bought Gears 4 and Batman Return to Arkham in the past couple of weeks, too).
