Development of the hotly anticipated Kingdom Hearts 3 is still chugging along despite its continued absence from gaming events, its director has said.
Speaking in a new update on the Disney-RPG sequel, Tetsuya Nomura made it clear there’s no cause for alarm regarding Kingdom Hearts 3’s development---even if a release date continues to remain elusive.
“The other game we are working on, Kingdom Hearts 3, is coming along steadily. There are new worlds in which you can run, jump… I’m very excited about moving Sora around in the wider space with his higher range of maneuverability,” said Nomura-san.
Kingdom Hearts 3 release date still to be decided
Kingdom Hearts 3 was announced during Sony’s E3 2013 press conference alongside Final Fantasy 15. The game had been rumored for many years prior to its formal reveal, although even three years after its announcement we’re still no closer to finding out exactly when the game will hit shelves.
The franchise debuted back in 2002 for the PlayStation 2, and spawned a number of spinoffs and sequels, including Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories in 2004 and Kingdom Hearts 2 in 2005. Over the next decade, Square Enix launched a number of titles spanning various platforms, such as Kingdom Hearts: Birth by Sleep, Re:coded, Dream Drop Distance, and more.
More recently, the publisher has re-released the PS2-era Kingdom Hearts titles alongside some spinoff titles with Kingdom Hearts HD 1.5 Remix and Kingdom Hearts HD 2.5 Remix. Early 2017 will see the launch of Kingdom Hearts 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue, which includes a high-definition version of Dream Drop Distance plus the all-new Back Cover and A Fragmentary Passage.
The Kingdom Hearts franchise has sold over 25 million copies worldwide as of October 2013.
