Well the cuddling is obvious. But they could also be there so people can admire how badass they look, ride them (games need transport methods afterall) or to use them as a weapon to slaughter your foes.

Alternatively they could just be to make you choose a different route since you fear and respect them too much to attempt trespassing on their territory.

Hmm, or maybe they could a boss! I actually haven't played much of Outbreak, so I'm not too familiar with the gameplay.
