Forums - Sony - Why does everyone say the VITA failed when...

The VITA...

Failed. 167 70.76%

Won. 42 17.80%

I'm unsure... 27 11.44%

Total:236

It's kinda like beating a man in a wheelchair in a foot race though, isn't it? I don't think there are any good arguments for calling the Vita a success, relatively speaking, even if it has a good attach rate.

I love my Vita, but I'd say the fact that Sony seems to have no plans for a successor speaks to how they view the success of the platform.

Because it has sold several magnitudes worse than its predecessor, both in hardware and software. The existence of another (arguably larger) failure doesn't change that.

The PSP was out for 10 years though....

Even if you give the Vita another 5 years, it'll never come close to PSP sales.

Signature goes here!

Compared to its predecessor, it's a great big ol' flop. There's no downplaying it. Having only one market it's doing decent in is a big red flag your platform isn't doing well.

Because it still failed, regardless of how other consoles do

The Wii U failed too, which is why both companies abandoned developing games on them

Why is the Wii U considered a failure if it outsold BOTH the Virtual Boy and the Dreamcast?

Edit: Why is the Virtual Boy a failure if it outsold the Phillips CD-i?

Bet with bluedawgs: I say Switch will outsell PS4 in 2018, he says PS4 will outsell Switch. He's now permabanned, but the bet will remain in my sig.

I dunno, niche or not, that doesn't change that the Vita gets a lot of games.

I am saying that your point that it is surprising the vita hasnt sold better is really not an issue because most games being released are not made to reach newer markets, hence software is not helping to expand the userbase beyond what already existed.

Getting lots of games is nonetheless a good thing, because ppl are buying them (at least from those who had a vita)

Well, I'm not saying it's an issue. I just thought the Vita with a lot of good things going for it as opposed to the Wii U which has many issues should be doing better, though it's struggling to do so. That is what is surprising to me.

One failure can preform better than another failure.

This. Has the Vita been more profitable than the WiiU? I don't recall Sony losing money on it, but it hasn't won them that much either.

I think the Vita has probably been more profitable than people think. But compared with the expectations Sony no doubt had when they were creating and released the device (stripping out expectations compared with other systems) it undoubtedly is a failure in their eyes.

For me it's actually been a huge success as it's the best handheld I've ever owned. And unless the NX is both usable as a dedicated handheld, and knocks it out of the park with diverse software (or at least a huge Virtual Console lineup inc N64 and GCN), I don't see any other handheld being able to touch it now.

It has sold more than the Wii U (15 million almost) and it seems (I'm unsure of this)that it has an attach rate for games higher than the X1 . Why is it a failure when they are selling games like crazy?

That is the logical equivalent of asking "Why is Antartica considered cold? It isn't 55 degrees below zero like Mars."

It is a failure compared to its predecessor.
A failure compared to its direct competitor in the 3DS.
A failure in software sales according to vgchartz numbers.
A failure in attracting general gamers.

People may like it but it is most definitely a niche console, and niche consoles is not what makes a business thrive.
