Forums - Sony - Should Shuhei Yoshida be fired from Sony?

No, the issue is announcing release dates too early (an industry wide problem), not delaying games.

A year in advance you dont know where your game is going to be, unless you force it out unpolished or put developers through even more inhumane hours then they already work.

No, but I've not been a fan of Shu's decisions for a number of years now.

Things like: strong PS3 support until its dying breath is great, but at the expense of PS4 & Vita support is incredibly short-sighted.

He's basically killed all the teams within SCE that produce mid-tier games, instead focusing on going AAA or nothing (with the exception of Media Molecule, I feel). Except indie studios like the kind that Santa Monica work with, whom they fund these games which are basically "AAA-indie" then send them out to die with little marketing, unless they get a lightning-in-a-bottle situation like Journey.

Overall, I think he's a nice guy but I'm not convinced he's the right person for running WWS.

I don't think he should be fired, but Sony definitly has not had a good 1st party for a few years now. It is very odd how they did such amazing work with the PS3, which was said to be incredibly difficult to work with, yet they are putting out less and lower quality games now, with the PS4 which is supposed to be a dream to work on.

What makes you say that?

When it comes to big memorable 1st party games for PS3 the only ones I can think of are Uncharted 1-3, The Last of Us, God of War 3, Killzone 2-3 & Gran Turismo 5. That`s only 8 games, over its 7 years between release and its successor, or an average of 1.14 games a year.

I`d argue that the PS4 has`t been that far off, if at all, that figure.

WHAT... Infamous 1,2, Little Big Planet 1,2, MAG, WarHawk, StarHawk, MotorStorm 1,2,3. Gran Turismo 6, Puppeteer, White Knight Chronicles 1, 2, WipeOut HD, Journey, God of War Acension... these are big memorable games from 1st party, didnt include smaller titles and the list becomes even bigger if Second party are included MGS4, Resistance etc.. And how many 1st Party PS4 Title we have so far. Killzone, BloodBorne, Uncharted 4, Infamous SS!? and this is the third year on the market

To give them credit, I really enjoyed Killzone Shadowfall, Infamous Second Son, DRIVECLUB, and Uncharted 4. The problem is thats barely one game a year, when at times on PS3, even early, it was closer to 4 games a year I was really enjoying.

Then you don't have Home, which should be part of PS4, especially with them charging for Online now. Home could have really worked well on PS4, and It would have been one of the biggest killer apps they could have ever asked for, for PSVR.

Finally, going forward, I just don't have a lot of excitement for what they are working on. I feel Horizan is over praised, and heading in the same direction as No Mans Sky. Gran Turismo Sport is a great looking game, but it should have come out in 2015, in 2017, four years after launch, I am expecting a full GT with 2000+ cars and 100+ tracks, not a Prologue. God of War, this one looks the most interesting of the traditional games they have in development. I'm not exactly sure I like it, but it looks promising.

All, I can say is, I really hope WWS has been hard at work creating amazing PSVR titles, and that is why things look so bleak right now. If that is not the case, then Sony has a serious problem internally, and it needs to be addressed ASAP. And to those talking PS4 sales, that is due to PS4 being the home of 3rd party games right now. Shu is very lucky that 2nd & 3rd parties have carried the ship so far.

Agree with everything you said, except for the part of Horizon. Sony's 1st Party moves have been questionable at best and also which games should be promoted (the Order vs Untill Dawn). This is the third year that Ps4 doesnt have any major AAA exclusive for fall. And the two exclusive games that are coming at the end of the year are releasing 5 days apart from each other Gravity Rush 2 1st dec and The Last Guardian 6th December. Even if one assumes devs are working hard on PSvr titles, then previous gen they had to worry about PSvita too, but the fact is I dont see any 1st party AAA dev have Psvr games in development, exception gurriela cambridge, but they were vita devs now a VR. so technically they dont count.

So wait, under his watch Sony's first and second party strength has swelled and their new console has been a smash hit and you want to fire him because of some delays, many of which aren't even that bad? Just...what?

I mean, he's no Don Mattrick, driving first party strength into the ground and refocusing the brand in a stupid direction and occassionally saying consumer hostile and insultijg things. Don Mattrick is the kind of executive you fire. Shuhei Yoshida is the kind you give a bonus.

But he's no Spencer, pandering to the demographic whenever they say "we want X"...

Lol
Well, for one, blaming Shu for game delays would be like blaming Trump for how long it took to get your lunch at trump hotel.
Shu is involved, yeah, but Shu doesn't personally oversee operations. There are probably like half a dozen managers and directors at every studio, and then district supervisors, and regional directors, etc, etc.

Second of all, he's probably well aware that their games are delayed a lot. It's common practice to overpromise on timelines because it's part of the overall strategy to announce and control information. That Hideo Kojima game isn't probably even thought out, but they made a video for it because it's a HUGE announcement. They don't care when it's out.

tl;dr
sometimes, it doesn't matter when your games come out, because for the majority of people, a console is sold on its POTENTIAL, rather than its current offering.

If that's your reasoning, HELLL NO!!!!

If delaying games is the worst this guy's done...then geez, do we need to replace a lot of execs out there.

White Knight Chronicles and Journey don`t count because they weren`t developed by Sony owned studios, Bloodborne shouldn`t count either for that matter.

Wipeout HD shouldn`t count, because if it did you`d really have to include the HD re-releases for PS4 too...

LBP was meh to me, hence why I didn`t mention it, but if you liked them then fair enough.

Infamous I didn`t mention since they were massively overshadowed by how much better Second Son was to me.

MAG I`ve barely heard of. Didn`t hear of it until I started using VGC and PSN in like 2012. I wouldn`t call something a big game if I wouldn`t have even heard of it if not for internet forums.

Warhawk and Starhawk... this is literally the first time I`ve heard of them, so yeah certainly not big or memorable to me.

Motorstorm... didn`t hear about that until Driveclub came out and people were mentioning what Evolution had worked on before.

GT6 seemed to be overshadowed by the PS4 launch, besides I was working out games per year based on time between PS3 and PS4 release, GT6 was after that anyway.

Puppeteer seemed liked it was pretty forgettable.

I don`t know why you`d say MGS4 was 2nd party, it was just a 3rd party exclusive. But considering we`re talking about how active Sony owned studios are anything that`s 2nd or 3rd party regardless of exclusivity is irrelevant.

Are u one those people who bought PS3 at the end of its life cycle? Coz an early ps3 adopter, even in his sleep can vouch for these games, I can give you StarHawk as it was poorly marketed by Sony, but Warhawk was the first successful online multiplayer game for PS3,

Wipeout HD was not an HD "Remake" of any previous wipeout games.

Didnt hear about Motorstorm? a game which combined sold 6+ million units!

Infamous Second Son better than 1, 2 LOL!! did u even play previous infamous games? or did u just see lets play' on youtube. Its like saying Bane was better villian than the joker in nolan's batman

Littlebigplanet sold 11 million units with 8 million user generated content, who didnt think it was "meh" game

Journey, White knite, Bloodborne should count coz they were co developed by Santa Monica and Sony Japan.

And considering a games isnt popular because of ur personal taste is subjective compared to the actual sales of those games. In my view Shadowfall, infamous and Uncharted are inferior to their Ps3 counter parts.

And besides that this gen havent yet introduced a single big new franchise yet. For me Driveclub was one but Evolution studio is no more so i doubt we will see Driveclub 2.

Why?

It's not like delaying a game is a bad thing. Forcing devs to rush out games to meet strict deadlines, and all those games being atrocious is something to be fired for.
