Ignoring your borderline-austistic understanding of social situations, there's a precedent for what's happening.
Virtual Boy was a "handheld"(?) console that absolutely bombed. No question there. It was also a fifth gen platform, and launched in 1995. Three years later, the Gameboy Color launched and quickly replaced it and the Gameboy/Pocket, yet remained part of Gen 5. Time frame plays a very important role in what generation a platform falls in, but "mulligans" relatively early in generational cycles have been shown to not move up to the next generation.
