Handheld main-series pokemon games are pretty straight-forward turn-based RPGs, with the main "side quest" being simply collecting every individual pokemon.
I know , but is it a strategy rpg?

You have no idea what a sRPG is do you? Pokemon is about as far from a sRPG as they come.

From wikipedia "The original Pokémon games were Japanese RPGs with an element of strategy" http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pok%C3%A9mon#Video_games

So technically it could be a different type of SRPG. It's definately not a ARPG so what else could it be? Is there another type I do not know of? You do use strategy in the game. YOu give some pokemon what type of moves based on how powerful , and how much that move has, then you choose which pokemon you want based on their type. It lvls up higher than most rpgs, and you also use items, and natures for the pokemon.

sRPG

They should just have stuck with the name tactical rpg. ANd made another genre that includes games that don't follow the tile format, but have stragety in the gameplay srpgs.

Pokemon is a turn based RPG being that the pokemon take turns at attacking each other.

Now what I would love is a proper pokemon game for the wii, non of this off shoot crap, but a proper game, just like the hand held version and here is a list of what I would like:-

-Beautiful 3D graphics with fluid animation for all attacks and pokemon.
-Deeper storyline.
-fully voiced characters.
-keep it turn based.
-make battles happen with in the environment the battle started from.
-have environmental damage depending on the attacks.
-allow the player to explore every known region with in the pokemon world as well as allow the player to collect all the badges from each of the regions gyms.
-online trading and online battles.

That would be silly. Every game involves strategy.

Well do you see a tile based system in games like battalion wars 2 or ghost recon that are strategy games. No so why is there an exception if it's an rpg.

Actually wouldn't the pokemon dugeon games be considered srpgs. They use the tile system.

I am slightly lost as to what you are talking about so my apologies if I go the wrong way (never played those games). Battalion wars is a real-time strategy game (as far as I know) so I think your point might be lost on that one. The reason the term was coined is because the genre needed a much deeper level of strategy in order to succeed. It was much closer to chess than your typical RPG so it was given the title srpg to attract the proper audience. The grid itself is not essential to the process, but mostly a relic of the past now. Phantom Brave had no grid and is still under the srpg banner.

^ SO I don't see any difference between pokemon and a srpg other than not having a grid.

In Pokemon you typically have one character standing still and attacking. In a srpg you have a squad of characters on a large map. Both are turn based so they do have that in common (which is why Battalion Wars is not a srpg but Advance Wars arguably is despite both being in the Nintendo Wars series). The concept of limited movement is also necesary, and the ability to surrond the enemy. There is usually a limited attack range as well as a limited movement range. SRPGs are essentially like Warhammer 40k without the painting or expensive figurines.

So that makes me right with the dungeon games being srpgs.

Again I don't know exactly the game you are talking about but I am going to guess no. If it is just the one person then it is not a srpg but a dungeon crawler. It may seem like a silly distinction but the games play completely different.
