Forums - Gaming - Ars: Bloodborne: The Card Game is actually pretty great

When I first heard that publisher Cool Mini Or Not was releasing a card game based on From Software’s beloved PS4 exclusive Bloodborne, I rolled my eyes. “Card game” isn’t the first place my mind would go if I were designing a tabletop game based on the white-knuckled, crushingly difficult third-person action of Bloodborne. Then again, I’m not award-winning designer Eric Lang.

Lang is not new to successfully translating video games into board games, and he has designed plenty of well-received board and card games based on well-loved franchises. Seeing that he was at the helm piqued my curiosity.

After playing the game, I was reminded why Eric Lang is a celebrated game designer and I am not. Far from being a lazy cash-in, the game is actually pretty great.

I have wondered about these card games. Since Hearthstone is the reference they're all built off, I wonder how much depth is in that game compared with traditional strategy games for example? Is it satisfying? Is it addictive?

Because I was think whether I should try one of the new card games like Elder Scrolls, Dark Souls or the Witcher 3 standalone card game.

Oh, there's this 'barely' known game most CCGs are built upon called Magic the Gathering...

Anyway, Bloodborne is not CCG (luckily...I pretty much despise them) - from what I've gathered (I mostly watch Dice Tower reviews, ocassionaly Shut Up and Sit Down) it seems fun to play, but it can be very random, which might not be problem per se for some people, but on the other hand is pretty bad implementation of Souls/Borne principles.

Oops. Magic the Gathering.

What is CCG?

And do you have yet formed an opinion about Elder Scrolls cards and Gwent?

CCG stands for Collectible Card Game - type of card game that has Starter deck and then more often then not has additional decks with new cards you buy that are random in nature, so you never really know what you're buying...honestly, I find the concept great for publisher, really bad for players. Magic is CCG.

LCGs (Living Card Games) are similar in nature, but don't have random decks. Android: Netrunner is probably being most played these days.

I don't like either category, actually I skip them by default, so I haven't really bothered with Elder Scrolls and Gwent...honestly I tend to skip a lot of card games, not all though, but I prefer board games in general.

My opinion, if you're thinking of getting into board/card gaming, there's plenty of really great games out there, going for well known video-game IPs translated into board games is usually not such a great idea...well, to counter myself this new LoL board game seems really good, X-Com is pretty good as well.
