Apple is just about the only western company I know of that sells well in Japan... It's always been part of the Japanese culture to reject foreign companies and products to a greater degree than most countries do.

Basically, give them a decent home-made alternative and you can kiss foreign sales goodbye.

A pack of lies.

Just because they don't want the Xbox - a system that doesn't even support most Japanese games doesn't mean they don't buy american.

Blame the people instead of the product...its really old isn't it?

I said they had a quality home-grown product. Japanese markets are far more insular than most, something that's been well known for ages. Actually take a look at the numbers on the site you posted; they're not indicative of a market that's terribly interested in American products for a country with a population of nearly 130 million. If anything, it suggests the opposite.

Coke-Cola.

Hah I was mostly talking about tech...  I suppose there's probably a few non-tech companies that have caught on there.

Is KFC as huge in Japan as it is in China? Never been to Japan but while in Beijing I was chocked to find a three story KFC in the dead center of town lol

I didn't see nearly as many KFC 's in Tokyo as in Beijing, but I did eat at a Tokyo McDonald's, as that was about the only food I could afford, ha.

Fun fact - there's a KFC right across the pyramids in Giza. I took some of my best pictures of the pyramids while eating mashed potatoes :)

Haha I went there too and took a picture of the sphinx from inside a Pizza Hut.

it is?

Really?  By far the 2nd biggest?

Current Gen:

Japan console sales so far: approx 6.2m

UK console sales so far: approx 6.7m

I was using Newzoo, but I also find another sources

Japan did over 2.8-3.2 Billions of US $ according to Famitsu (3.9 Billions with Console + PC according to Newzoo). Uk did 904 Millions of euros with software and 690 Millions of Euros with hardware, 140 Millions with PC Hardware for gaming  and 130 Millions with used items(I don't know what it is), 360 Millions with acessories and 1.225 Billions with PC and Console digital, this is what makes the things hard.

So, both have pretty much the same revenue for consoles.

Exactly.  And kowenicki just proved that the Japan market is pretty much equal to the UK.  Isn't it funny how you can say that and at the same time act like Japan isn't important.

The ps4 will get 8m+ sales easily in Japan this gen. Considering how the xb1 is selling WW Microsoft would absolutely love that.

Will Microsoft launch the Scorpio for Japan ? Even the PS4 had some months of delay before launching on Japan. But I think that Microsoft will still launch the Scorpio there, after some time, with a small stock.

The sad thing is that Xbox One took over 3 years to outsell Xbox360's launch numbers, on Japan.  The Xbox 360 sold more than 60.000 in 2 days of launch.

Not really.

The xbox One is a disaster in Japan, the WiiU is poor and the PS4 is not good.  The PS3 was bad for a playstation console so the PS4 "matching" that is not performing "remarkably well".

I'd add that the PS3 had real competition there, so the PS4 barely matching the PS3 sales in the absence of real competition is bad.

Yep. It should be doing much better if it doesn't have a tough competition.

Did it, though?  If you were a core gamer in Japan who actually wanted a jump from last gen, the PS3 was all by itself.  The 360 was always niche there, doing only about 1.7M, and while the Wii was a huge success with the casual market, the PS3 only sold ~2M less than it.  If the PS4 can manage ~10M in the shrinking console market in Japan, I'd say that's pretty damn good.  Hell, the other consoles aren't going to manage to do anything even close to their predecessors.  The Wii U won't even hit half of what the Wii did there, probably be more like 35% of the Wii's numbers.  For XBO, it's even worse, with it maybe selling 150K-200K when all is said and done, so maybe 10% of what the 360 did.

Was the Wii market competing with the ps3 though?  Wii sold 12m mostly to the more family orientated and casual gamer.

PS3 still 10.5m.

This gen the ps4 is going after the ps3/360 market not the ps3/Wii market.

I disagree that it should be doing much better just because the Wii U failed.  It's matching the ps3 launch aligned and that is what I think it should be doing.  Retaining it's market,  rather than lose it like Microsoft have and Nintendo largely have.

ouch.

Possibly.  But thats poor for a playstation in Japan (not "remarkably well").  Paricularly when there is little competition.

There hasn't been real competition for a playstation home console in a number of gens. The Wii created a new market.

In a supposedly dead market,  matching last gen numbers is incredible.  And whether you think it's poor or not it's adding a nice little total to ps4's WW lead over xbox.
