Forums - Sony - PS4 Pro’s inability to play 4K UHD discs is, no doubt, short-lived

Sounds like bullshit to me. There was a cost break down of the XBox One S and the 4K UHD drive was listed as about $15 more expensive than the regular drive at cost.

Why does it cost more if there's no physical difference to the drive?

Why would SONY railroaed consumers into getting PS4 if they're not interested in video games? That is like SONY only offering bundled PS4's with Controllers you dont need, and a game you dont want for 500 instead of just a standalone console you do want for 299.

Why would Sony railroad anyone into getting a PS4Pro AND a 4K BR player?

The answer is the same. They want money.

Railroading means to deliver only one option. No one has to buy a PS4. A PS4 is not a 4K player. A PS4 was never marketed as 4K player.

Im saying it would be great for people who want both. This is just if what the OP says is true though.

A matter of time was this nonsense is sprrad all over the internetz.

So let me get this straight: Sony intentionally cripples the hardware, selling it for less than its actually worth and letting a feature lie idle they could advertise the product with, thus have better sales. All this for boosting the sales for another product that wont come out until next year march and that will doubtfully be succesful (ps4neoproUHD4k or not).

Hunting Season is done...

you're half right here. Technically even the PS3 could have played UHD with its drive if it was possible to output a 4k signal. PS3 supported dual layer BD and was actually used for example with MGS4. UHD Blu-Ray is a different standard though where a single layer is 66GB instead of standard Blu-Ray being 30GB. If UHD Blu-Ray was on a dual layer BD with 50GB, then yes a simple firmware update to the video player would enable these to play.

That being said, the capability to store UHD content on a standard 50GB BD is there, but it would not be enough for some movies, which is why the UHD standard does not call for the use of 50GB BD. Similarly, DVD would have been capable of storing a small amount of 1080p content, but not enough for feature length movies, which is why HD disc formats were developed in the first place.

Because, as I explained just a few minutes ago, there is a FUNDAMENTAL physical difference.........

No. That is not what you said. There should be no reason why anybody should feel forced into a PS4 and a 4K player. Personal problem.

Would it be great for PS4 to have both? I guess... but lets get real, this is about the competition having something your choice doesnt have. If XBOX didnt have 4K player  no one would care.

Yup. Not only being railroaded, but XBox One S is basically is the only logical choice. For the price ($299) it's by far the best 4K UHD player on the market and it can double obviously as an XBox. I had no intention of buying one this holiday but now I am going to get one.

I have a gorgeous 4K 65-inch Samsung set coming in tomorrow and I want some movies to watch on it, real 4K too, not some shitty stream from Netflix that looks like a regular Blu-Ray disc.

People want great tech, but don't want to pay for it. The simple fact that there was a huge amount of the consumers telling Sony that the PS4 Pro should be less than 400 or bust means some costs need to be cut.

I personally would be happier to pay more and get an upgraded CPU than getting any bluray drive at all. I'm 100% digital and yet already have to pay for a drive I do not want. Would be even worse if they added the UHD BR drive personally. I hope they can offer 2 PS5 sku when the time comes. 1 with no optical drive for cheaper would suit me just fine thank you very much
