Forums - Gaming - Cost of UHD Blu Ray - Is MS subsidizing Xbone S, or is Sony just milking it?

So has this thread proved one way or the other with actual evidence of Ms/Sony's OEM bulk costs for both the xbox slim and ps4 pro/slim?

We need the total cost of all components and total costs of making both systems complete to determine how much either company is making or losing when it comes to just the 4k drive as I assume they're not exact in costs without the drive.

I figured you'd update the OP with found evidence since you targeted a member of the forum specifically in it.

No, because no one here has any understanding of how much each part costs to the individual companies.

I believe this is a case of Sony trying to push 4k streaming (as part of a deal with the likes of Netflix). The grumbles of "patching UHD in later" may be false unofficial damage control or Sony knows they can have their cake and eat it too.

Why? over 80% of the 4k televisions have 4k streaming build in to the television, more power effecient, easier with the TV remote, streaming services are not something you need a console for anymore.

The only "why" I can come up with is money. Way back when the PS4 was released there were rumors of negotiations with Netflix over 4k streaming; we thought that was ridiculous, PS4 can't output 4k. That rumor never really went away, and now years later we have this. We can assume Sony cheaped out to a) keep the cost down, remain profitable, and maybe sell UHD players separate, or b) because a deal(s) was made. My intuition says it's b, with them banking on money from these deals being greater than from UHD BluRay sales. I could be completely wrong, but that's the nature of speculation, ya?

or C) a combination of A and B :P

If true you could say Netflix subsidized the cost of the PS4 Pro :P

Streaming from an external device that polishes the image and sound gives it a better quality/experience I guess. But the PS4 isn't known for image refining, like a dedicated blu ray player does.

Please excuse my (probally) poor grammar

most televisions have a good upscaler, so the image should be equal or better, but overall people have proven over and over again that streaming quality isn't as important, the Wii was the #1 streaming device for netflix for years and that didn't even look sharp on an old regular tv lol.

The streaming is added because the console outputs 4k. This meens it supports 4k streaming, this costs nothing. the UHD was not included to keep the price low, its that simple, some people won't like it, others will love the price. Its a decision, but streaming has nothing to do with it.

Looking back to the Pro reveal and the Netflix section, it's clear some kind of deal went on between the two. Not sure if it meant Sony couldn't have an UHD blu ray drive in the Pro as part of the contract though or if it just meant Sony would promote Netflix and receive the application....

I literally posted a link to an analysis of the xbox s component costs on the last page. Neither the pro nor the slim are out yet, and while there are a few of the latter in the wild, I don't think we'll see a teardown and component analysis of them for a while.

Then why did he start a thread calling out another member for not being able to substantiate his opinions?

Because this is the internet, and people will argue; even if everything they're arguing about is conjecture and speculation.
