Yup, it's going to be sad to see the 3DS/Wii U era Nintendo gone. The only officially confirmed NX game made by Nintendo, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, already gives us a glimpse of where things are heading. It's a damn shame. |
What, a game that was conceived and developed for the Wii U over a number of years and quickly ported to the NX?

Well I wouldnt say the Zelda games have been dumbed down.
The interface of smartphones is not superior to that of buttons. As long as smart phones continue to be nothing but a sheet of glass, the games played on them will be less complex and dumbed down.
So, as far as THIS gamer goes, if gaming goes smartphone... I go somewhere else.
If a year ago someone said the exact same words Miyamoto said as to why Nintendo should start releasing their games on smartphones, they would be burned alive at the stake. Yet now the Nintendo fans are so glad that Nintendo has "come to their senses". Heck I remember the amount of hate Pachter got when he mentioned at some point that Nintendo is leaving huge money on the table by not bringing their games to smartphones. How times have changed.
That being said, I personally am not interested in playing any smartphone games. I just hope Nintendo doesn't lose their true identity which in the search for the smartphone success.

Its not like Mario Run would have been made on the 3DS or WiiU if Nintendo decided not to enter the mobile market. Its just a simple title to get people interested in the franchise. If the next Mario game for the NX is also being released on mobiles, then I would start worrying.

Most of the games came back to the way they were in the 90's. And mainly they are not in par with what is done in gaming nowadays.
Mario 3D world and New Super mario are dumbed down in comparison to 64/sunshine/galaxy
Starfox Zero, went back to Starfox 64, and forgot the improvements made in assault.
Skyward Sword, Zelda Triforce heroes
Metroid Other M threw out the exploration, then we got Federation Forces.
Mario Tennis Ultra Smash...
I can think of only two games that really improved on their formula or at least were as good, Mario Kart 8 (thanks to cheap DLC and 200cc mode) and Pikmin 3.
Otherwise, everything else was inferior, dumbed down, made cuter. Nintendo clearly isn't moving forward, they are just trying to use the nostalgia factor, and make everything have a broader appeal.
But like I said, when you try to make all your games for everyone, you're not making games for anyone. Evertyhing feels diluted, flavorless.

I disagree, a lot of Nintendo games have moved on from their 90's counterparts, inc Mario. Donkey Kong TF is the best in the series, as is Smash Wii U, I think 3D world is a better game than Mario 64 and Sunshine and Zelda just goes from strength to strength. The games you are using in you argument like Federation Force and Ultra Smash are either a spin off or a rushed game to fill a release schedule.

I don't think it's really worse per say. I mean one of biggest reasons Fire Emblem Awakening and Fates are selling so well compared to their predecessors was the fact they made it accessible to gamers other than the hardcore audience. For me, and I'm sure for others, Fire Emblem was a series was interested in since Melee but never really got around to get into the games until Awakening. Sure the art style and the game play were great but to have casual mode put less pressure on me while playing FE for the first time, let alone a turn based strategy game.
Mario has always been known for easy to play hard to master. Donkey Kong is still challenging even in his latest adventures. Mainline Pokemon games are already known to be for everyone (though they have been a tad easier to complete, though I personally don't mind). I've played a lot of Nintendo's recent games and they're not often dumbed down to me (I guess Skyward Sword took it a little too far but I enjoyed it nonetheless).
I respect your opinion, but I disagree as well. I think they're still releasing excellent games that are just trying to see a broader audience. Core gamers are a smaller audience compared to the casual audience in general. If people here in this forum are complaining that Nintendo's core audience is dwindling (like 70+ million if you count the 3DS user base which is still Nintendo mind you), then just reaching out to the core isn't going to get it done. Of course a balance of core and casual audience is preferred. I don't know, I've played games for a long time and might just have a different perspective and experience from you.
